Give me some more bands....
2003-12-02, 8:00 PM #1
Ok, this is kind of a post your music thread, but not really. The point is to get me to buy a new CD, because I really havent bought/heard any new bands that I like recently.

I've gotten a lot into 80's music, mostly Tears for Fears and others, probably because of the Donnie Darko soundtrack, I love those songs, I'm listening to The Killing Moon right now, what band is that?

Anyways, I'm looking for bands, old or new that sound like, or similar to any of these bands:

  • Jump, Little Children
  • Tinkers Punishment
  • Jeff Buckley
  • Travis
  • Coldplay
  • Oasis, Blur, Stereophonics
  • Sigur Ros
  • Doves
  • Muse ~ I dont have any of their CD's, so which one is the best?

Just give me a couple suggestions or post what you like and we'll swap artists or something. The point is for people to find out about music that they like.

Try this site:

http://www.gnoosic.com

You give it the names of 3 bands or music groups that you like, and it gives you a list of similar bands/music groups that you may also like. It has certainly worked for me, I've found several new music groups through it that I never would have heard of without it.

I havent heard the whole thing, but what I've heard from Muse's new album is really good.

I got a few suggestions for ya. You probably know and have formed opinions of most of them already, but hey that arent on your list there, and my comments go for everyone who reads this thread [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Powderfinger
Awesome Aussie rockers with a huge following out here, but they havent made it in overseas markets yet. They should, they deserve to. They're a bit more mainstream than Radiohead or Muse, and a bit more rocking than Coldplay or Travis. Favourite songs would be: These Days, My Happiness, and Pick You Up.

The Verve / Richard Ashcroft
Knowing your music taste you probably have Urban Hymns already. At least I bloody well hope you do! If not, get it. Now. Anywho, after the band split up, Ashcroft launched a solo career with surprisingly good results. His sound is really mellow and relaxed with many rolling ballads, but thankfully (for us at least) his despairing lyrical style remains. Favourite tracks: Lucky Man, Bittersweet Symphony, Science of Silence, Brave New World, Man On a Mission.

Ash
These guys are quite rocking for my tastes, but they certainly have their moments. They're kind of like what would happen if you mixed Blink 182 and Oasis. There's that retro garage rock feel to a lot of their stuff, and sometimes they get a little weird. Most of the time though they just rock. Favourite tracks: Shining Light, Burn Baby Burn, Sometimes.

Phantom Planet
These guys only have 1 album that I choose to know about, but it's one of those in my collection I find myself always going back to. They're relatively soft rockers with radio-friendly tracks, with an ever so slight tip of the hat to Radiohead showing through in a few songs. Some of their tracks have such pathetic lyrics, they're good. If you ever see The Guest in a bargin bin pick it up, you wont be dissapointed. Favourite tracks: Anthem, In Our Darkest Hour, California.

Other bands you might want to give a go but I cant be bothered writing about:
Starsailor, Semisonic, Motor Ace, Nick Drake, Ocean Colour Scene, Stone Roses, The Dandy Warhols, The Strokes, The Vines, You Am I.

*Muse - Thoughts of A Dying Atheist* <- Absolution, latest album
*Muse - Stockholm Syndrome* <- same
*Muse - Citizen Erased* <- Origin Of Symmetry, second album
*Muse - Falling Down* <- Showbiz, first one

As Muse albums go, I suggest you get Absolution, which is their latest. It has much more variety, in my opinion, than Symmetry (which is just scales. Good scales, but scales nevertheless...)

I want to see them live recently, and I was stunned by how good they sounded.

However, I've not heard much Showbiz, apart from the odd few songs, which I thought were really good (Sunburn, Filip and Muscle Museum).

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

If you like Coldplay, you will love these guys. Their new CD, Source Tags and Codes, is amazing and has an incredible mystic quality to all the songs. Every song is lovinly crafted. You can get some free MP3s at www.mp3.com, but they are down right now. Download the song "Relative Ways" as soon as you can... you won't be disappointed. And listen to "How Near, How Far" while you're at it.

Echo and the Bunnymen! They're one of my favorites. Don't buy the album right away though, nice new rereleases will be in stores soon.
I have to emphasize them especially if you like Coldplay, as they give Echo a lot of credit for influencing them.

Stat listed some great stuff, and I have more to add:

Electronic
The Pixies
The Stranglers
The Replacements
Bauhaus
Peter Murphy
The Meat Puppets
Siouxsee and the Banshees
The Psychedelic Furs
The Stone Roses
The Flaming Lips (Though I haven't heard any of their stuff from the 80's.)
Toad the Wet Sprocket's first two albums.

Some other stuff:
The Velvet Underground
Interpol
The Pink Floyd's first album
Frank Black
The Breeders
Glen Phillips
Gomez
Iggy Pop
The Stooges
Massive Attack

Heh, I own all the White Stripes' albums, and I own Cake's Fashion Nugget. I dont listen to the stripes anymore, or the strokes for that matter, and the only song I really like from Cake's latest release is Short Skirt, Long Jacket.

I downloaded some Manic Street Preachers (i think that's what they're called) and some Ash. Gonna get to The Verve and some of the stuff on your other guys' lists later and I'll try to download at least one song by everyone's contributing bands and give a little critique of why my music is better or something...

Ok, when you get to Tri-Ac, turn your speakers up as loud as they can go, and max out all musical things. (Subwoofers ect.)

They're not 80's rock, nor are they really like anything you mentioned, but I need to pimp them anyway.

Jeremiah Freed

Talk to me. I can hook you up with their stuff.

And Pete Kilpatrick Supergroup is also nice. I can hook you up with them as well, since you won't find too much on p2p programs.

Ya, but there's a difference between Goo Goo Dolls, Lifehouse, and Placebo and Coldplay and Travis... I like Coldplay and Travis and despise the ones you just mentioned.

Just because they're pop doesnt make them the same type of pop. Think Britpop. It's a whole different approach to pop-music.

Ok, here's the first bit of my responses to the bands mentioned:

Powderfinger - My Happiness - I like it. Reminds me of a song I've heard before, but I cant remember which song. I like the overall band sound. From this song though, I wouldn't buy the CD.

The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony - I think everyone's heard this song at least once in their lives. I like it, I didn't know it was by The Verve, which I always get confused with The Verve Pipe, hey it happens. Soundskind kind of like the Beatles. May buy the CD.

Phantom Planet - California - Fun song. I like this song, might pick up the CD, but I doubt it, the guy's voice gets annoying pretty early on.

The Smiths - This Charming Man - This song is annoying. I hate the guitar sound, at least I think it's a guitar, you cant really tell, but I'm pretty sure.

Toad and the Wet Sprocket - All I Want Nice little acoustic song. Then the chorus came around and reminded me of lame worship music I used to hear at church. I'm going to find some other songs by them....

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart I like this band. I've heard them before but I'd forgotten what they sounded like. Probably won't buy their CD.

Toad and the Wet Sprocket - One Little Girl - This song was a vast improvement of All I Want. I dont like the guy's voice, he goes flat a lot throughout the song, I guess I've gotten spoiled by listening to really really good singers early on... = Jay Clifford, Jeff Buckley, Fran from Travis... I like the song though, still reminds me a bit of lame worship music. Probably wont buy the CD.

I'd highly suggest that everyone, regardless of your musical tastes, listen to Primus at least once. Go buy their new DVD/CD- Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People. It gives a pretty good representation of what their music is like. If you don't want to spend any money, downoad any of the following:

Too Many Puppies
John the Fisherman
Jerry Was a Racecar Driver
