Do any of you have it? Cablevision is getting a bit ridiculous... So I'm thinking about switching to FIOS.

How do you like it? I was thinking about the 20Mbps down and 20Mbps upload option. That sounds plenty fast :D

Although they do charge more per month for a DVR so thats kinda lame. Think I could make my own media center (hackintosh!) and hook it up?

The people on Revision3 who have it rave about it a lot, I'd get it if it were available out here.

FiOS is the only real ISP anymore, as far as I'm concerned. Cable and DSL companies are jokes. Their bandwidth rates and prices are awful. AT&T U-verse, which is their version of FiOS, maxes out at 1.5/1.0 Mbps. Are you ****ing kidding me? I mean, they have really nice SDTV quality and great DVRs (people used to say the HD sucked, I don't know about now) but the internet is just sad.

I thought Cablevision went bust.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I have RoadRunner Turbo and I get like 16/1. RoadRunner has always been terrible with the upload, but I'm pretty satisfied with the service I get. I only have to "deal" with it three months of the year, and the rest of the year I have University of Wisconsin connections :) (apparently, their servers store about 75% of iTunes music I heard from some tech guy there)

RR is still 50 bucks though. If I remember correctly, better speeds are even cheaper from FiOS. I wish they had it in Wisconsin.

Where did you get that idea? I don't really see any signs that Cablevision will go out business anytime soon.

Being that I sell U-Verse bundles, I concur.

But ATT will rape their customers blind as well as slap mysterious and unexplainable charges on your bill. Its a jolly good time.

Unfortunately where I am we have either time warner or frontier, of which both are stuck in the dark ages of non-fiber networks selling for fiber prices.

Really? I didn't see that package. I know when my dad first got it, it was pretty slow. In any case, 1.5 upstream is pathetic.

Also it's ATT lol

20Mbps upstream would be nice, but I probably wouldnt notice. I don't do alot of uploading. Actaully FIOS's 20Mbps/5Mbps plan is much closer in cost to what I pay. That probably is a better deal, except I remember what a headache my parents had with Verizon DSL and I wouldnt want to go back to that. What speed are you getting with Cablevision?

Ah, I remember my parents having alot of 'downtime' and the speed wasnt that impressive. It was probably a phone line quality issue.

Well, we had a 768/128 line, so speed wasn't impressive either. :P

If you actually meant kilobits, I feel sorry for you :suicide:

My cell phone, on cheapo proxied 2G internet gets more than that, something around 200kbps down, and 160kbps up. :awesome:

My home internet is around 800-850KB/s down, and around 55-60KB/s up. Terrible upload but it works. I have Road Runner.

I use a local ISP. Roughly 750kbps down and 530kbps up.

I don't know if we'll go for the 20Mbps up, but it would definitely get used!

I recently had to downgrade because it was freaking expensive. I'm considering ditching cable entirely, just getting FIOS, and not having any television at all.

I mean. I already just use TED and uTorrent to download all the shows I watch anyway.

But I don't think I would actually notice the speed difference. I can't afford to keep my gaming habit up, and I just let torrents run overnight already.
2009-01-18, 8:39 AM #21
Actually. Downgraded has had no effect on my browsing at all. Probably because I rarely got greater than 50kbs down from any particular website before anyway.

We did something similar at my apartment upstate. It worked really well, especially considering we had an XBox to use as our media center :D

I got 122393 down (15 MB/sec) but RIT caps upload at 2000 Kbps per connection.

I like that my internet connection actually exceeds 100 Mbps. I need to have a gigabit connection to take full advantage of it. :XD:

Hmm, tried another server and got 5000 up. Shrug.

Yeah, I've actually got my 360 (Which I hardly ever play anymore. Just... bleh. Everything is boring.) streaming video from my desktop to my tv. And I ripped my zim dvds so I can watch them on demand without leaving my couch. :D

Being that torrent speed is mostly based on how many others are seeding the file at the time, how much if an impact would a FIOS line have on your download speed for a torrent? Just curious.
