I picked up XP Pro x64 for 30 bucks and an ECS G31T-M for $24.99. I'm not a huge ECS fanboy, but for 25 bucks I'll give it a shot.

I'll scavenge parts from my desktop- 2Gb or 4Gb of RAM (8Gb installed), a DVD-RW (two installed) and maybe a HD (not sure if I want to give one up, though). I have an extra mouse..probably have a spare keyboard available too. I'd like to get one of these, but not just now.

So...I can either buy a new processor for this one, or replace mine (E2180 @ 3Ghz). Whaddyathink?? :XD:

The general idea is for this to be a media server / HTPC thing, not a gaming rig.

Just curious where did you get the XP Pro deal? Ebay?

I think you should upgrade your current system and use the spare parts for this 2nd one. An E8400 @ 4ghz would be a nice upgrade.

It's more that it's held together with duct tape and chewing gum. That and the fact that it never saw a retail release makes driver support abhorrent.

If you can get drivers for all your devices for XP 64, you're probably fine. Otherwise, bahahaha.

See, I don't really have any devices yet (everything is onboard so far)..so hopefully that won't be difficult. :P

Those count as devices, since you need drivers to use them.

I have a hard enough problem with the 32-bit drivers for my old mobo.

I had a few apps that wouldn't run in x64 but I never had any issues running it.. but I didn't use it very long
