Unexpected..just found a buyer for my 9600GT- it's been great, but I've had to knock the details down on some stuff (e.g. STALKER Clear Sky), and that annoys me.

I'm getting 60 bucks for my 9600GT (amazing how the value dropped), and I'm not sure if I should go with a new nVidia card or with a 4850.

I have an E2180 @ 3Ghz (probably replacing with something else shortly), 8Gb DDR2, Audigy2.

The 4850 is pretty great bang for your buck; if you want something a bit more powerful, the 4870 is good as well. I've got a 4870X2 and it hasn't disappointed me yet.

nVidia has decreased the prices of the GTX 260s and 280s quite a bit to stay competitive with the newer ATI line. So it pretty much depends on how much you're willing to spend, and which company you prefer, I guess. (For pure wtfpwnage power there's the GTX 295, which is two 280s on the same card, in line with the 4870X2 - not much worth it unless you upgrade the rest of your system as well, though)

Usually when I see this question asked, people usually respond with - What is maximum resolution of your monitor? If your gaming at 1280 x 1024 or lower a 4850 / 9800GTX will probably suit you fine. If you want to game at higher resolutions then you better look at 4870 / GTX260.

I previously owned a 4850 and it was good for the 19" LCD, I was using at the time. I did all my gaming at 1280x 1024 and it was good. It's only weak spot was Crysis.

Since then I've upgraded to a GTX260+ and a 24" monitor. Crysis performs much better. I play everything at 1920x1080.

Overall I am much happier with my Nvidia. Granted I havent tried a 4870x2, so maybe Kyle90 is that much happier than me ;)

Yeah Crysis seems to run better on nVidia cards for some reason - not that I have any trouble playing it with all the settings maxed, at high resolution, anyway.

1680x1050, but when I get my new TV it'll hopefully be 1920x1080. :ninja:

I can get an Asus 4850 for $135 with WoW, but I don't want WoW.

Does Linux run better with nVidia cards, or is that a thing of the past?

Yep. .(

The best I've found (with HDMI support) is this- MSI 4850 for $134.99 AR.

I'll keep looking..seems like there should be a deal somewhere.

Edit: I'm finding used 4870s for $160-170, so I might get one of those..

You can use HDMI via an adapter.

GTX 295 is somewhat around twice the power of a 4870x2. Something like that anyway.

I've got an 8800GT. I love it. lol
2009-01-20, 4:22 PM #18
Well, not quite twice as powerful:

Still, there's a reason I called it "wtfpwnage" :P

The GTX 295 is also around $100 more >.>

I'm very happy with my 4870 1GB, myself.
2009-01-20, 5:10 PM #20
Yeah, also I didn't show the other graphs where it mostly has a <10% edge over the 4870X2 in most games.

Personally I'm interested to see what the next generation will hold. I've heard rumours that the 5870X2 will have over 3 teraflops of computing power.

I hope the next generation will have a card that can run on less than 25W <_<

The superconducting video card: it can run on zero watts, as long as you keep it cold.

Because everyone packs enough liquid nitrogen to create a superconductor! :hist101:

Actually they have superconductors now that work in the temperature range of dry ice. Much easier to acquire!

But it's a bit of a misleading title since it's only '0W' when on standby >_>

Still better though. :P
