Something that is not being said about Obama
2009-01-19, 4:49 PM #1
Since Obama won the election, I've seen two main themes about him. The first is how historical it is that America has a black president. The second is celebration that the Republicans, mainly Bush, will be out of power. But I think there is something about Obama just as important, but has been mostly ignored.

He had pretty much no federal political experience nor any experience as a governor. For all intents and purposes, he was just a state senator. He really didn't have much to prop up in the way of achievements. Obama was a political nobody. Yet he ran anyway. His fundraising revolved around small donations from average people, not huge amounts from businesses, celebrities, and the like. He took on one of the most powerful political institutions in the country(Clinton) and beat it. He then went on to take on a politician that many people thought would have a general election for President in the bag if he could just get past his party's primary(McCain).

In a system that so many people consider rigged in favor of the upper crust elite in a good-ole-boy system, Obama ran a grassroots campaign and beat the establishment more than once. That is the embodiment of "anyone can be the president", not just those that are members of the American political nobility or spend years carefully grooming themselves for a run at the White House. Why hasn't that been talked about?

In a negative way, yes. Nobody considered it in a way that he wasn't a part of the congressional political establishment, though.

I think his point was this part

Yeah, I wouldn't hesitate to place Obama's campaign very high on the list of the best Presidential races. What he did was truly amazing, helped in part by a very unpopular administration, but still there were no guarantees. Everything ran smoothly, there were very few controversies that lasted beyond a day or two, and he understood just what the people wanted to hear. Brilliant!

Of course, the past few days have been killing me. The HBO Special on this weekend was overkill to the worst degree; seeing all the Hollywood celebrities basking in "their guy" winning was too much. I want Obama to succeed, as should every single person in this country. But let's hold onto the praise, and actually have the man DO something in office before he is hailed as the next Lincoln.

He's in a perfect position for fame and glory...if the country improves, he'll get the credit. If things don't get better, they'll blame it on Bush. :P

It seems like all my dad would talk about was how Obama was a nobody in politics and had no qualifications for being president. In any case, you can't deny that he is an amazing salesman.

This is absolutely true. It's also exactly what worries me and why I did NOT vote for him.

Without knowing the details, would it be fair to say he made promises of how he was going to spend money BEFORE the collapse of the banks which he/bush then had to throw billions of taxpayers dollars at?

If there's other stuff, fair jab, but if your talking about anything like that - times have changed.

he's not actually Muslim. And if he were, what would be the issue with that? We're fighting Muslim extremism. It would be like not wanting to vote for a Christian because of the KKK

Now, I'm really impressed with the guy, though that might be because nothing impresses me more than strategically implementing marketing and PR that effectively.

I think he'll do well by us and I think he's what the country needs right now, but he's not the second coming of christ, and I think a lot of people are going to be pretty disappointed when things aren't magically better the minute he takes office.

sorry for that somewhat serious rant in the middle of merry-making. :-/

Nonsense! Didn't you pay attention to the presidential campaigns? Under Bush, things never changed, so they can't change until Obama has been sworn in! Duh!
