Since Obama won the election, I've seen two main themes about him. The first is how historical it is that America has a black president. The second is celebration that the Republicans, mainly Bush, will be out of power. But I think there is something about Obama just as important, but has been mostly ignored.
He had pretty much no federal political experience nor any experience as a governor. For all intents and purposes, he was just a state senator. He really didn't have much to prop up in the way of achievements. Obama was a political nobody. Yet he ran anyway. His fundraising revolved around small donations from average people, not huge amounts from businesses, celebrities, and the like. He took on one of the most powerful political institutions in the country(Clinton) and beat it. He then went on to take on a politician that many people thought would have a general election for President in the bag if he could just get past his party's primary(McCain).
In a system that so many people consider rigged in favor of the upper crust elite in a good-ole-boy system, Obama ran a grassroots campaign and beat the establishment more than once. That is the embodiment of "anyone can be the president", not just those that are members of the American political nobility or spend years carefully grooming themselves for a run at the White House. Why hasn't that been talked about?
