Watcha think of this?

Cuba seems to be open to Obama. Obama seems to want to shut down Guantanamo and play nice with Cuba.

I think it would be a good thing. It really doesn't make sense to continue the embargo anymore.

Only reasonable option, really. I have faith that it will happen. McCain probably would have been closer to Bush on human rights (read: completely wretched and evil).
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

We'll never know how McCain would have acted as president...I feel like he had to compromise what he advertised a lot for the campaign, and in reality he would have been a pretty moderate president. I think he'd have done something about the situation there if not outright shut it down like Obama wants to.

Anyway, I don't see why not, I am no expert but I fail to see how the embargo has any significant positive effect.

Why is everyone on the planet thinking that the United States is now freed from eight years of a brutal dictatorship that was ended by Obama throwing Bush down a reactor shaft?

Because he's already done more good in one day than Bush did in 8 years?

Because everyone on the planet thinks that Bush is the entire Congress.

On this guantaunimo thing, he didn't need congress to shut it down.

Maybe not, but the vast majority of things he was blamed for were also Congress's fault.

you guys need to get rid of the seniority system.

the ones who have been in congress the longest are the most corrupt and the most stupid.

I'm not sure how I feel about Obama banning the use of torture as an interrogation technique.

Yea, at first I was like "Laaaame." but I thought about it more, and it's probably not going to change, we just won't hear about it now.

Everyone is all excited because 'Obama allows embryonic stem cell research' which... wasn't... illegal...

Not to mention there's been way more success working with adult stem cells. You know. Because a person's adult stem cells are actually from them. Not from some random embryo. Yeah.

No, it wasn't illegal, but Bush banned any federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. Why would a researcher go into an area where the funding was scarce when they could study adult stem cells and have funding instead?

Other types of stem cells have had the opportunity for breakthroughs since they could get federal funding. We can't say how embryonic stem cells would stack up had they gotten the same chances as the others.

As for the Obama/Cuba thing, he probably will be a lot more lenient than Bush was. Either way, real progress for Cuba is only likely to come when Raul Castro makes internal changes. He has made several notable improvements already, and he'll no doubt do a whole lot more once his big brother has kicked the bucket.

The man from the Canadian Lands is more wise than 95% of our populace.

I'd expect we'll have to wait for Raul to kick it too before anything real happens.

I don't think so. I think that late in life Fidel has been much more moderate than he ever was as a revolutionary. He has even invited a few journalists from America to interview him and spend time with him. Raul is much more liberal than Fidel ever was.

FWIW, McCain was going to close Guantanamo too.

you are aware that the US has a law that is essentialy enforcing the US embargo onto foreign corporations, or at least those that wish to deal with the US. If trade was opened with cuba, the quality of life there would greatly improve.
