Specifically, 2 speakers or 2 plus a subwoofer. Not looking for any 8.1 super 5 dimensional sound systems here, just something for a small desk setup.

Any suggestions?

I got these for around 30 dollars 2 years ago. You can find them if you look online but they apparently have a new model of them. They are loud enough to blow the skin off your face if you want them to, and they don't get distorted like most cheap speakers. I can honestly say these are the cheapest/best speakers I've owned, so give them a shot.

(P.S. I'd try and find the x-230's as I hear the x-240's suck massive balls.)

The X-530's are the 5.1 version of the ones SAJN posted. I've got them and love them. Picked them up for $50 at sams club about 3 years ago.

Do yourself a favor and at least spring for some klipsch promedia 2.1's. Only cost about 100-120 if you know where you're buying from, and they're worth every penny. ****, I'm about to transfer them to use as my home theater speakers, because they're just that loud/good.
