I think my new Imac is screwed

I'm having a problem with my iMac dvd drive. I'm trying to install something really big but the installer crashes with at the same place every time (256 mb of like 7 gigs or something) and gives me 'error -36'. It sounds like the dvd is no longer spinning - up until 256 mb it's making that high-pitched CD humming noise. I tried the dvd on a school mac and it worked, although it stopped the DVD-spinning noise at 256mb as well.

My computer is an intel iMac (last year's model) with the latest OS.

Also I should add that the drive has been working fine for playing/ripping music CDs and watching DVDs, but this is the first program I've tried to install from DVD. In another issue, I'm getting some graphical corruption across the OSX top menu bar...I don't really care about that but I thought it might be related.

Do other DVDs still work? And what do you mean by graphical corruption? If it's often, I'd just take it in to the Apple Store, assuming it's still under warranty.

As mentioned above, music and movies work but I don't have any other large programs to attempt installing. I bought the computer used. I'll have to see about getting the warranty stuff. I was just checking to see if maybe there was a fixable software issue or something...I use the computer for schoolwork, so I'd rather not take it in.

No. It's like weird bright splotches across the top menu bar, always exactly the same.

HALP my windows has graphical corruption, I can see my desktop behind the title bars but it's all fuzzy. :saddowns: :saddowns: :saddowns:

What are you trying to install? And are you sure you have enough free disk space? Try googling the name of the product plus the error code you might find something.

If you can't find anything try ripping a disk image and installing from that.

I'm trying to install a thing that's been compressed via Roxio Spanner. I have plenty of disk space, but I didn't think of ripping a disk image. I'll try that one.
