Is it Windows 7 or just 64 in general.

itunes seems to hate running on windows 7 64. its slow, it plays mp3s with pops and hisses and the volume cuts in and out. it takes a long time to respond when an ipod is plugged in. before anyone asks, yes, i did download the 64 bit version.

anyone else have this problem thats running it? is it just me? is it 7 or is it a problem with 64bit OSs right now? i sent a report to microsoft, but since its an apple product i dont see them trying to find a solution.

I'm running itunes on Vista64 with no problem. I would say it's just because 7 is still in beta

It could also be that iTunes sucks.

Oh no someone's insulted an Apple product; burn him at the stake.

what's so sucky about itunes on windows? it lists and plays my music well and syncs well with my ipod, easy to list song by certain categories (date added, artist, last played, etc), easy to organize playlists and burn cd's, doesn't ever crash, and don't really notice any huge memory footprint (i can play/do anything i want while running it). what else is needed? only thing i don't like about it is how it keeps asking me to download unnecessary apple software like bonjour every so often.

never tried playing video through it, but it's first and foremost a music player, so why bother? just use VLC :-P. you guys are like the neckbeards who use linux and whine about windows.

itunes is crappy on windows and on osx
2009-01-26, 3:32 PM #11
so is quicktime

Do you have a Creative sound card? They have notoriously bad drivers for Vista 64. It's probably the same driver for 7-64.
2009-01-26, 3:35 PM #13
itunes is still carbon. ever since osx 10.5 came out they've been using nsoperationqueues for background tasks but that's not available on windows so

I had issues with MP3 playback in Windows 7 x64 (Audigy2)...it seemed to happen whenever there was HD-intensive activity going on (saving a file, etc).

i do, but i dont believe that would affect performance in only one program. the files play fine in any other program.

Windows 7 is slow, iTunes is slow (so I hear), slow + slow = slower.

Why does iTunes suck? Because anything it can do Winamp can do better.

Songbird can do it better too (so I hear, again I haven't used iTunes but I hear iTunes users like Songbird).

I used Winamp for a while, and recently switched over to foobar..Winamp was getting too slow- would take way too long to start up.

Itunes on windows often 'forgets' about some of my music. Not sure how, but albums are just missing. I have to add the folder into the library again.

JLee- Winamp loads really slow for me as well sometimes.

I really really hate the way itunes manages the library. Unless you let it "manage" the library itself ("manage" meaning it dumps all of the files into one folder and mangles the filenames) it won't automatically update changes to your music directory. So if you move a song to a different folder you're SOL. What's worse is that you can't just tell it to re-scan your music directory, because then it'll just add in an extra copy of every song already in your library. When it comes down to it, the most convenient way of managing your library in iTunes is to delete your entire library and re-scan any time you make anything other than the most insignificant additions and changes.

The only reason I still use itunes is because I normally set it to party shuffle and I don't get new music very often. If I were a music nut, though, I'd rather kill myself than use it.

Jon, you might give foobar2000 a try if you can be bothered to configure the UI layout to be something decent. Since version 0.9.5, the UI layout engine is actually usable, and the music library automagically monitors your music folders and updates accordingly. It's extraordinarily powerful, it makes Winamp look like a plaything by comparison.

well can anyone offer a free alternative for ipod users. i know the software exists, but i've had trouble finding a decent (free) alternative. it would ave to be 2nd gen touch compatible though.

I never liked itunes or quicktime... they always were getting in the way of enjoying good media...

The only reason I have quicktime is to watch .mov videos, a format I dislike terribly...

I think I used to watch them in vlc, but I can't remember if it could reproduce them.
Nothing to see here, move along.

This.

It takes way more time to set up foobar with ipod touch support than it's worth

I didn't like foobar when I tried it back in the day...but now, with the ability to easily view files by auto-monitored folder structure, I love it. Plus, it doesn't freeze my system up for 15 seconds while it loads. :P

As of late, my iTunes can't seem to detect my iPod connected to the computer. This is strange because my iPod charges and the computer knows it's connected, but iTunes doesn't give a ****.

Odd.
