Do you have one? If so, where, and how secure is it?

Are you looking for one? Have you lost one? Today, it was announced that over 70,000 jobs would be cut in the next few months.

This morning at work (a city government agency), the city administrator announced a hiring and salary increase freeze - no new hires (even replacements), no raises, nor any increases in benefits. I'm fairly certain people will be getting cut soon. Rough times. I'm a few steps up the ladder, so I am not too worried yet, but I'm sure my time will come.

How about you? How's your employment situation looking?

Working in retail it does seem rather dark and gloomy, but the company I work for has seen off two recessions and seem to be ok, just glade we are selling a niche product and are apparently "pretty recession proof" according a few articles that have been kicking around, so im ok, but some of my friends who work for Dixons (PC World, Currys) are panicking.
Flying over there some were...

Went to an interview Friday... which turned into the guy saying "yea... we dont have a lot of work to be doing right now. we're all kind of bored. But we'll file your name and give you a call when we can!"

I work as an assistant for a small engineering firm in NYC. Mostly for educational reasons, but I'm not in danger of losing it anytime soon. The firm specializes in a wide range of several small jobs and small buildings, and there are always small jobs and paperwork to file in New York no matter the times.

I work IT and manage the website for the city of annapolis. They brought me in because they're moving from an archaic web design and CMS, to a new design and good CMS.

I also do freelance web development for various firms around the city.

Yes, I have one. Yes, it's secure. The town would not be happy if they laid us off. :P

We don't have a contract now, though, and we're not having much luck negotiating- so we didn't get a raise last year. .(

I work for a local newspaper/publishing company, and despite slumping sales (in each of advertising, paper sales, and printing work), I'm pretty sure my job is secure because it's a family-owned business that's been around for 134 years. I'm one of the few people there that actually has a clue what's going on (Our editor either doesn't know or doesn't care about proper grammar, our salespeople don't know the dimensions of our paper, or even of the adverts they're selling, and our production crew is still living in the 90's where everything was "pasted up" and you didn't have to worry about files being in the appropriate location to ensure the proper quality when printing, etc).

Unfortunately, I'm leaving my job in 5 months to relocate. I'm going to begin circulating my resumé over the course of the next few weeks.

fulltime phd student, I've got funding for another year and half and I plan on using every last second, hopefully by the time I finish the global economy will be in a better shape.

Education in general seems to be pretty fine at the minute and I'm technically employed by the UK government so I'm ok-ish on that side of things.

I'm graphic and web designer for the local college of nursing here. Given how many visitors they get and how often we're updating content, my job is pretty secure.

I need to get cracking on the summer internship search. Sadly, to get a good summer job you have to start applying during winter finals, and to get the grades necessary for a good summer job you have to not start applying during winter finals.

I'm a projectionist at the nearest AMC 20. In 2011 they're supposed to switch to all digital projectors, so my experience with 35mm will be pretty much obsolete. Not that this is my intended career or anything anyway.

The rest of Detroit isn't too happy though, that's for sure.

I'm looking for a job as an entry level mechanical engineer anywhere in the Eastern US. There are still new jobs being posted, but I've not had much luck so far.

BPO company here in ****chester for AT&T.

For the record, I advise never to get their home phone packages.

I don't see where my job will ever be in threat, they just keep hiring more and more people. The dropout rate is pretty insane though, considering a majority of their trainees are street riff-raff. The good part is, if for some reason they close down one program (ATT is the biggest client so that won't happen.. someone has to tame their pissed off customers) they will transfer you to another vendor (dell, gateway, equifax, etc). If any of you are in ****chester and are unemployed, let me know, I can probably get you a job there in no time.

Bobbert, I've seen several mechanical engineer postings here in Rochester for a company called Harris. They manufacture the militarys radios. Don't know if its something your interested in, and I certainly wouldn't reccomend the area, but if you are in a pinch for cash, it could work out for you.

I've got a job in structural engineering, which after 2 rounds of redundancies doesn't feel all that secure.

Hence, I've got an interview on Thursday for another one, which is MUCH closer to home. Hopefully I'll save a shedload on fuel.

Well, they had another staff meeting this morning - 15 people from our department are going to be laid off (out of 75 total layoffs for the whole city - none of them cops or firemen, the bastards). So, out of our fifty employees, 15 will be gone in a few weeks. They aren't naming names yet, but everyone is pretty scared.

The company I work for holds a contract with one of the largest life insurance company's in America, to perform hardware break-fix on the workstations/laptops and printers. I'm sure someone out there can do it cheaper, but I feel pretty secure (my company has had this contract for at least 6 years)

My company does cell tower maintenance and upgrades (and a few new constructions here and there). We have contracts to do business with all of the major carriers. I'm also working with the sales directors to add a new service to our growing list, that will help us diversify to other markets (not just the cell phone industry).

We're looking at going from 100 employees to 200 employees this year. We hire people in the electrical trade, mostly. All of our remote offices but one has or is moving to a new, larger office (including our corporate office).

I'm in the last semester of my degree. I currently work part-time at the school recording studio. No idea what I'm going to do in May besides possibly teach guitar, but I'm not sure if I want to do that. I want to go on a sailboat adventure or something.

I'm also still kicking around the idea of join the army. Not sure if my vision's good enough, though.

Unemployed and also having a crap time finding a job.

I graduated with a Business Degree with emphasis in I.T. last may, which was a crap excuse to say I did 1 semester of C++, some Office courses, some basic "this is what a computer is " courses, and one or two IT management courses.

Basically, IT was my major but the school dropped the program and I'm trying to get experience to break into the industry.

I'm taking MS Server 2008 and SQL courses at a community college nearby right now.

No Tech departments are hiring.
I almost took an internship in san diego that was PERFECT, but it was A. Unapid and B. 75 miles away. 150 miles daily. Too much car maintenance.

Veger - http://careers.esri.com/

Search for their headquarters in Redlands, CA. 130 openings, and your education matches their needs almost perfectly. Great pay and benefits, too. Also, Redlands is not a bad place to live.

I would apply there if I had an IT/computer education, instead of a stupid civil development degree.
