i've got a new external hdd. it's been formated ntfs. it doesn't show up in My Computer when it's plugged in. any suggestions?

Run diskmgmt.msc.

Does it show up in the list (under Volume)?

Sounds like you need to assign a drive letter..?

Windows only automatically assigns drive letters to partitioned and formatted drives when you plug them in, otherwise you have to do it manually like JLee said (right click the entry in Disk Management).
