So I went into a hospital so I could get a shot applied to me, and out of curiosity I went to the labotory section to ask about blood analisis. When I asked how much an HIV test and a cell count would cost, I was sent to another section of the hospital to ask for packages, as I would get more worth out of my money their. So I go there, and wait, then a nurse explains to me their three packages, which were incredible. Covering every aspect of my body, full checkups. The prices however, must have lowered my heart rate cause I feelt dizzy. Starting at 900 dollars, all the way to 2400....

All I WANT is too see if I got any diseases in my blood, yet nobody in the damn hospital can give me a clear answer of what I need to do. Instead they want me to pay through the nose for a whole bunch of crap that I don't even know what some of it is.

The most interesting thing is, during the mind numbing conversation of the nurse, my mind kept thinking about posting this on massassi. The elaborate post I had planned has been forggoten, an improvised version is now posted.

In short... I find this hospital thing to be a big zoo.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Something tells me that you somehow expected a simple blood test would be a end-all-be-all indication of whether or not you have certain diseases, got upset over terminology they used, didn't expect to be more than a simple process of collecting blood and feeding it in a computer, and now look down everyone in the hospital.

Then again, it's MEXICO.

Ask for a CBC + platelets lab. If you're interested in your kidney/liver, ask for a complete metabolic panel. For an HIV test, ask for ... an HIV test. <_<

This is why you go to the hospital when there's something wrong with you and pay for the tests and procedures you actually need.

I don't understand why you need to worry about having HIV out of the blue. What exactly SF_Gold does that make him worrying about acquiring the virus, but then again, I don't want to know.

Also $2400 for a full panel of labs isn't TOO outrageous assuming it really is a full panel, and shouldn't you have insurance anyways?

No I don't have insurance.

I find it outrageous to pay 2400 dollars just so that some one could say to me at the end of the day one out of two choices:
1) You got something which we detected in this test, and were gonna have to treat it. (unlikely)
2) You are healthy, go home. Thank you. (for your money)

It's not outrageous because it costs money to run labs and to pay the people who do them. Especially if it's a whole battery of tests.

And if you were to be treated it would cost way more money.

And they probably would expect you to have insurance if the latter. The sad truth is a lot of hospitals won't take patients without insurance unless it's life-threatening because they don't want to have to deal with people not being able to pay.

Edit: Here, I searched Google and arbitrarily picked a random hospital's publishings of how much it costs for certain procedures/scans/labs/tests/etc. Here are they for JUST labs:

Quote:
The following charges reflect the hospital's 30 most common laboratory procedures.
Amylase $80 Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) 117 BUN (Urea Nitrogen) 34 CBC with Auto Diff 75 CBC without Diff 62 CK-MB 114 Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) 191 Coronary Risk (LIPID)Profile 109 CPK, Total 38 Creatinine 34 Culture-Blood 172 Culture-Urine 85 Electrolytes 95 G&M - Multiple Uncomplicated 223 Glucose, Random 34 GYN Cytology, Thinprep 83 Hematocrit - HCT 27 Hemoglobin - HGB 27 Lipase 97 Liver (Hepatic) Panel 110 Magnesium 56 Man. Differential 48 MIC 75 Protime 48 PTT (RPT) 66 Strep Screen (Cult-Throat) 67 Troponin I, Quant. 119 TSH 120 Urinalysis-Micro 68 Urinalysis-Routine 45
The above charges do not include fees for the Pathologists which are billed separately.

You see how quickly it adds up.

I agree with SF_GoldG_01: $2400 is almost 24 MMORPG engines. An early diagnosis and anti-retroviral treatments would only put, like, decades on his life at best. It's not worth it.

Any sort of clinic will be way cheaper than a hospital, but you'll have to wait longer for the results as the tests will be done elsewhere.

Nah, they're all uptight Christians who can't afford syringes. Mexico has roughly the same HIV prevalence as Canada and Finland.

The United States, on the other hand... uptight Christians who can afford syringes. And then you have Russia which is full of atheists who can't afford syringes - a little worse but not by much.

And then there's Africa, where people eat raw Chimpanzee, rape is a cure for all diseases and governments deny that HIV exists. I'm pretty sure this is the polar opposite.
