Bought myself an lg hd dvd/bluray/dvd/cd reader for $119 cad. After a $100 gift card and some spare change I am now enjoying some Blu-ray goodness :D What are some good blu-ray transfers that you guys recommend?

Thanks = ]

Planet Earth is the only thing that is tempting me with Blu Ray, but I still haven't updated.

it would be easier to list blurays to avoid

here's a few just off the top of my head
Gangs of New York (horrible transfer... the image quality makes VHS look good)
Scary Movie (another disaster of a transfer)
The Longest Day (how NOT to do a black and white film on bluray)
The Truman Show (1.66:1 aspect ratio stretched to 1.78:1 plus excessive digital noise reduction)
Event Horizon (weird stretching of the image)
Patton (lots of debate over this one... a fine transfer that was dicked around with prior to being put on bluray)
Pan's Labyrinth (excessive digital noise reduction resulting in loss of detail UK release has the best video quality (though the US release has the best audio))

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I just picked up V for Vendetta, but I must say I'm really disappointed with the image. There is so much noise in the film and it just really ruined it for me.

One of the things that I want to do is to own every pixar movie released. But too bad tehy never go on sale = (

that "noise" is film grain... if they removed it they would remove detail plus i've never found the film to be all that grainy so i'd suggest at the very least using a calibration disc and eyballing a somewhat proper calibration because it's likely a setting on your set is making the grain stand out (you have your sharpness setting maxed don't you?)

as for pixar this is probably the best price you can find

http://www.amazon.com/Pixar-Short-Films-Collection-Blu-ray/dp/B000V1Y446
http://www.amazon.com/Ratatouille-Blu-ray-Brad-Bird/dp/B000VBJEFK
http://www.amazon.com/Wall-E-Three-Disc-Special-Digital-Blu-ray/dp/B001EOQWFI

and i will tell you everything from pixar looks excellent on bluray

I'm actually watching this on my monitor. I'm guessing that the pixel density and the closeness of a monitor adds to the effect?

Btw, thank you for taking the time to post up the links. But I live live in Canada, and those hot prices don't translate over to the amazon.ca

Although Blu-ray make movies look nicer, you should still only buy movies that you enjoy. Making a bad movie look nicer is like putting glitter on a pile of crap. Anyhow, if you're interested in seeing how good some Blu-ray looks, I suggest http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/reviews.html

"On that note, a word of warning for purists -- grain has been artificially reduced using a minor application of Digital Noise Reduction (DNR). Because this decision by New Line has sparked some controversy, I spent quite a bit of time comparing this Blu-ray release to the previously released high-def import edition, hunting for blurry patches of skin and smeared textures. My takeaway: fans with screens larger than 100" may see a loss of clarity when directly comparing still shots from this domestic version to the same shots on the import, but the vast majority of viewers will never notice or care (especially considering how insignificant the visible difference actually is when the film is in motion). While I'm not a personal fan of New Line's unnecessary adjustment of the original print, I feel it's crucial to note how judiciously the technique has been applied in this case.

All things considered, 'Pan's Labyrinth' is a great looking addition to your Blu-ray library that puts the standard DVD editions to shame. The transfer may not be as natural as the very best top-tier high-def releases, but it comes incredibly close. Fans aren’t likely to be disappointed." - http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1181/panslabyrinth.html

not even close... i've viewed the US and UK versions on a friend's 32" 720p set at a normal viewing distance and the problems are worse in motion even on a smaller screen

the "when it's in motion" line is pure BS when these are in motion those transfers end up with dancing grain blobs and other weirdness (and the DNR on this one is far from minor) just because it's a good film doesn't mean you need to defend a bad bluray release

but having dug this up just for the hell of it... if you really want to see horrible bluray transfer click here for gangs of new york

Well believe it or not. Some people (especially during the "war" with HD-DVD) would just buy movies just because of how good a transfer might be.
2009-02-01, 3:34 PM #15
well some people just want some good demo discs to show off their setup so they might buy something they don't really like that much for that purpose... where someone like me can easily find something i enjoy that makes for great demo material

i suspect the sales of stuff like planet earth would be lower if it wasn't for those people

Hey cloud,

Thanks for the link. I'll be sure to favourite that.

I watched Kingdom of Heaven yesterday. The scenes were freaking clear, and I didn't see any of the noise that V for Vendetta had. But for for some reason, the skin tones were kinda blurry.

Sure thing, silent_killa. Video quality plays a big factor in me repurchasing some older titles. If it's a favorite movie of mine, I often consider upgrading to a Blu-ray edition.
