I read an article today titled "Can Your Name Make You a Criminal?" and I found it quite amusing. I don't think an explanation is necessary.

Quote:
In a new study to be published in the March issue of Social Science Quarterly, David Kalist and Daniel Lee, economists at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, find that adolescent boys with unpopular names are likelier than other boys to be referred to the juvenile-justice system for alleged offenses.

Popular names the article lists: Michael, David, John, and Bob...

How about the unpopular names: Preston, Tyrell, Kareem, and Malcolm.

Quote:
Rather, boys with unpopular names are likelier to live in single-parent households and have less money. Those with unpopular names may also find it harder to get jobs because of the negative stigma toward certain names
Think while it's still legal.

This post reminded me of the book Freakonomics. It's a fantastic book, IMO. One of the chapters in the book elaborates partly on this very topic, among plenty of others. Highly recommended.

Goddamn people crapping up awesome names.

Well, my dad's name is Malcolm and he's stolen enough things from where he worked.

Namely about forty boxes of Multiplex notepads.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I was reading a digg thing on the name thing and I think a few people said it was from that book.

Well, in theory it's not their fault if they're being referred to juvy for the same offenses

Unless I misunderstood the article

SAJN is saying it's the names pointed out as examples of "criminal" names. When was the last time you met a white guy named Kareem or Tyrell?

I disagree with him. The article wasn't racist enough because it didn't mention the elephant in the room. The article's really saying that black kids commit more crime, but they drew a correlation with retarded names instead because mentioning the fact that black kids commit more crime would be "racist" even though it's probably true.

Never: I'm Canadian. We don't have black people here because we never felt a need to import them.

Islam has made greater inroads into Africa than Christianity so a black guy is about as likely to be named 'el hajj malik el shabazz' as he is to be named 'frank'
