Does your computer have a floppy drive?

If it does, do you use it?

No, I have an USB floppy drive somewhere yet I transferred all the data from my floppies onto a CD in 2003 and I haven't used them ever since. Don't even need any of those for emergency restarts...

I can't even remember the last computer I owned that had a floppy drive. A laptop we bought for my granddad had a USB one, but that's it.

The workstation I am posting this on has one, but I built this thing in 2001, and I don't think I've used the drive in the entire time.

None of my boxes at the office have floppy drives. A few of my user's boxes do, but those are all old (late 90's) workstations. None of my users use floppies.

I think the last time I used a floppy was sometime in 2004 to boot Partition Magic.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

[http://www.blogitude.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/floppy8.gif] I have not used one since I played Tetris off one in the early 90s.

I think floppies suck. Why were they ever even used, considering how little data they can hold?
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

It was useful... back in the day.

My main use of floppies was so I could put a NES rom on it coupled with an emulator. I wouldn't trust a floppy with important documents.

Then Zip disks came out. 128mb on ONE disk!? That blew my mind.

I used to need one when I still ran Windows 2000, because I had to install it over the top of 98SE and that needed a boot disk.

Now? No need.

lol.. Whenever someone mentions Zip drives it always cracks me up. My friend stored all his porn on a zip drive as a kid. So one day while I am hanging out at his house his father all the sudden comes in. Holding the zip drive. "I have to talk to you Seth. I found this Zip drive. While I have to admit it was some pretty good stuff, I'm going to have to confiscate it." and walked out of the room.

Oh man. That had to be one of the funniest moments in my life.

I was thoroughly impressed in 2001 when I found all the computers in the engineering dept at uni had Zip drives. I think I was the only person on my course who wasn't "what is this MAGIC you speak of?!"

Oh, and my old laptop that I got in march 2004 had a floppy drive (never used) then I got a mac in july 2005 which didn't have one.

Zip drives were popular before rewritable CDs or DVDs became mainstream. We are talking the 90's here.

Good job on that.

My middle school had zip drives when it was new and I remember when it was the big thing.

Except actually we only had ONE zip drive (maybe two) plugged into a PowerMac G4 (the cool transparent blue kind) and the bookstore didn't sell zip disks. Or maybe it did but no one knew you were supposed to buy them. So people tried to stick floppies in it and failed. And then I graduated. <_<

ZIP disks are RAMedia, CDs are not, so it was kinda a big deal since the only other portable RAMedia we had was floppies.

Now we have thumb drives.

Anyways, I have a floppy drive but I haven't used it in years. I disabled the boot option in the BIOS and I have considered disabling the driver in Windows since it slows down the display of drives in XP's My Computer.

LOL, I had one of those. Same thing happened to me.

I was asking about the floppy drives because I was going to pull my drive out to free up (I thought) an IDE slot on my mobo. After looking though, the floppy drive has it's own slot. I only have one IDE slot, and my CD burner and my DVD drive are in it. I was going to hook up an extra 35G HD I had laying around, but I guess I can't.

I have one and I use it occasionally. I was having network troubles and needed a report I wrote on one computer to go to another computer for print, and pronto. I have a little stash of floppies and put one in, tossed the file on the floppy, went down to grab a drink while it wrote the file, ran back up, popped it out, took it to the other computer, which told me it wasn't formatted properly. I went and made some oatmeal while it formatted, took it back up, twiddled my thumbs while it wrote again, took it back down, and printed it. It was my only option and it didn't let me down. However, my next computer probably won't have one.

I got a copy of Descent with our family's first Pentium (100) PC. It came on a seedy rom.

In other news, Descent messed with my head when I was young. :psyduck:

I havent touched a floppy disk in years.

I was cleaning up my computer crap this morning and noticed I have accumulated alot of 56k modems. This thread got me wondering, which is more obsolete - the floppy drive or dialup internet?

Floppy drives.

A LOT of people are still on dialup particularly those out in the sticks where they have to use antennas for their TV. Broadband is still overpriced IMO to which that slack-jawed yokel in his busted shack can't afford.

Broadband is incredibly overpriced and poorly managed.
