Why must everyone scrunch up at a light?

EXPLAIN THIS LOGIC TO ME!

Am I the only sane and patient person alive?

Or am I the only person on the road with a manual transmission?
2009-02-02, 9:08 AM #2
probably the last one. Manual transmissions kick ***.
DO NOT WANT.

Not when someone is almost touching your bumper at a red light on a hill!

I'm trying not to go double or nothing on this whole accident ****. My truck = damage causing machine

He is not the last one.

If you roll into someone it's their fault (assuming they are too close), if someone did that to me I would take advantage of it and run right into their bumper.

What I meant was that the last option he listed in his post, the manual transmission, was probably right. Not that he has the last manual transmission ever, even I have one. :P

And @ Rob: If you really don't have enough room to roll back once you let go of the brake, use the e-brake instead of the footbrake and let go of it once you accelerate. I do that when I have to get out of being parallel parked on a steep hill.
DO NOT WANT.
2009-02-02, 9:40 AM #7
Whenever I ride with someone that does this, I yell at them for being too close.
2009-02-02, 9:55 AM #8
Meh. If you're good, you can get going without hardly rolling back at all.

Free, it also depends on his clutch - a "tight" clutch or a "loose" clutch (also called "soft" or "hard"), as well as just how steep the hill is. He might be fast, but gravity might be faster.

I drive one of these;

If I roll into someone chances are it's going to do a lot of damage. I've already totaled a lexus, not trying to up the ante here!

PS, my truck isn't nearly that nice!

I'd love for you to come and drive my truck. It's impossible not to roll on a hill from a stop.

It's old, big, and heavy.
2009-02-02, 10:34 AM #13
Hey, in drivers school you are taught to stay back from the car in front of you. If you roll into someone on a hill it's their fault, so why are you worried about the damage you'll be dishing out?

Because I just had a susbstantial car accident.

**** isn't fun. It's nerve wracking. Not trying to repeat the process in any shape or form!

A long time ago, we used to only have one of those.

I got to drive it when it came to stay at BWI for a while.

Now we have like at least 30 of the flaming turds, even one that is a low rider. Now I don't feel so special. :(

PS, those trucks are hard as **** to drive, even with power steering!
2009-02-02, 10:57 AM #17
Hell, lots of automatics now rollback much easier than they used to because of the way the torque converter is designed to increase fuel economy. Not as much as manuals of course, but it's definitely noticeable.
2009-02-02, 11:07 AM #18
Yeah, but in an automatic you can just kerslam the gas and hold the brake. I can't do that without stalling. Stall on hill = BAD BAD BAD BAD
2009-02-02, 11:12 AM #19
Right, it's definitely not nearly as much of an issue on an automatic as it is on a manual.
2009-02-02, 11:26 AM #20
I always roll back just enough to scare the person behind me when they stop on my *** at a light. Usually gets a few extra feet at the next stop. Plus its fun.

Throw on the hand-brake, step out of your car and proceed to ream the **** out of them. :colbert:

I dunno, maybe I realize how many people I could hurt if I drove like a douchebag.

Maybe thats why I don't do it. I know my truck is good for it. It's plenty fast, but is there any real point to putting a bunch of other people in danger on a public road? The answer is NO.

A variation of this idea actually works. When on a hill and someone is coming up behind you, just release the brake for a second to roll back a couple inches. Serves as a warning that your vehicle can roll backwards. I used to do that all the time when I lived in a hilly area. I never had a single person get too close after seeing me roll back. Most people just never consider the idea that a car will go backwards at a light.

That's exactly what I do....with similar results. Good times.

that was the case with me- a very loose clutch and a very steep hill.

[EDIT: SIDE RANT. People who tailgate on the highway PISS ME OFF. I was doing 80 in the passing lane on a 65 mph speed limit highway, and some douchebag rode up on my butt, edging me to go even faster. I was already zipping by cars, and he wanted me to go faster, and he was REALLY CLOSE. I couldn't merge right and let him pass either because it was rush hour and there was nowhere to merge. So this huge truck in front of me merges right, and i go to pass him so i can finally merge, and then suddenly the truck merges back into my lane and i have to slow down substantially. Not suddenly, and only down to 75. I was not tailgating and thus there was no problem. However in my rearview mirror I see the guy right on my *** suddenly get WAY TOO CLOSE to my car and he actually tries to veer off the road to avoid hitting me, and then he finally regained control and kept tailgating, after nearly ramming me. What the f***?]
DO NOT WANT.

I'm going to have to remember to do this the next time I'm driving an automatic so as to confuse/anger the person behind me.

I have a soft clutch. It's really hard for me not to roll back on a hill. I do the "roll back when people approach." It does work. People don't get up on my ***.

I just learned how to drive stick this weekend. It's definitely a lot of fun. Learned on a BMW 3 series :D:D:D

However, there were a few times when someone pulled up right behind me. Since I just learned I kind of got nervous, but I managed to get away without rolling back.

Stalled a few times though >_>

I learned to drive stick in one when I was 14

It's quite easy to balance the clutch so that you're stationary on a hill without using breaks. In fact it's the recommended way to deal with short pauses such as waiting for a light.
