Recording and transcript of tower communications @ Laguardia... Plane hit birds, had to ditch in the Hudson. Listening to it is just pretty amazing, I found it quite interesting.

I find this kind of funny since my Psych professor was talking about stress the other day and said he had an "exclusive" video recording of inside the cockpit during the landing in the Hudson.

He showed us the landing from "Airplane!"

I just wanted to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you.

I dont understand why everyone is going ape**** over this....

A plane fell into a river because birds got caught in its engines. Not even terrorist remote controlled birds. Yippie. -.-;;

Seeing as how no one got hurt, I find the whole situation hilarious and very Indiana Jones-esq.

Because you know, planes surviving an emergency situation where a common outcome involves a devastating crash and everyone dying totally happens on a daily basis. This time of year the Hudson gets so many perfect landing of crippled planes that they should schedule these bird-hating fiascoes ahead of time.

Well, thats not entirely true.

There have been several smaller planes (usually turboprop) that have survived a ditching effort with most or all of their passengers intact.

1549 is really the first time a COMMERCIAL ****ING AIRLINER has successfully completed a ditching manuever.

This is a big deal because;

The FAA does not mandate pilots train on this
The Airbus 320 uses a lot of composites
This is the first commercial jet air liner to ditch successfully in a large, deep body of water
The plane touched down on the water so perfectly the airframe was barely compromised, allowing the plane to float for as long as it did
This was accomplished WITH OUT ENGINE POWER. This plane flew EIGHT ****ING MILES with only APU (auxillary power unit) and RAM (ram air turbine) power. I've sat in the cockpit of an Airbus A300 (widebody aircraft) and moved the flaps with only APU power. **** IS NOT EASY. Albeit that the A300 is still mostly mechanically controlled and the A320 is fly by wire, this is still a monumental ***** of a maneuver that requires incredible skill.

To summarize;

If you can't see why this entire event was amazing, you're retarded. Go get hit by a bus.

This kinda stuff scares the **** out of me, since I have such a fear of it and my girlfriend leaves for Hong Kong in 13 days. :(

Planes, and heights scare the **** out of me. I live in the 11th floor of an apartment building, but still going out on the balcony at times gets to me and freaks me out a little bit. It's totally weird because I have been on a plane before, yet only to Mexico which was only a 4 hour flight, but still. People ask me why I could have gone on a plane before but still retain my extreme fear of heights and flying, and it really is difficult to explain but the best way of putting it is.. While I am there, on the plane, in that position, I don't think about it and it doesn't bother me. But once I am on the ground, and I sit and think about it, how I was up in the air, etc., it starts to scare the **** out of me.

I don't understand who you think is going ape**** over it? No one was before you posted, Onimusha.

You know, I'm gonna bring this up because I have this phoebia thing.

I cannot, see my self flying in a commercial plane again, after 9/11. I was about, 11 at the time (OMG 11! CONSPIRACY!!!) and I had only flown in a commercial airline plane twice. Now, I'd rather take a bus. I just don't want to step on a plane again.
Nothing to see here, move along.
