It's not.

And the number's going to really plateau until there's a good mainstream alternative to DSL and cable.

Rural areas are screwed because phone and cable companies won't expand their service because there's little/no profit in it for them. The only thing that's going to change that is further developement in those rural areas, which is of course somewhat impeded by the lack of these amenities. It's a catch 22. I don't really see much progress in this area either until some sort of alternative is found that isn't as limited in terms of distance.

They were testing powerline networking in our hometown. They said it had some bugs, but also a lot of potential. I hope they expand that to rural areas. That could solve a few of the problems with DSL or Cable.

There is wide-range wireless, but it'd obviously not be as secure, prone to interference, and not as fast as a good wire-based connection. I know there are some towns in California that have some wireless ISPs.

And of course we all know of the glaring problems with satellite.

I had no idea there was such thing. Sounds pretty interesting. That would be awesome if they could eventually bring that to most people. Its a definite alternative to cable and dsl [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

/me is in this category. :/

Sadly, I have it even worse than most people who live in rural areas. I pay approximately $70-75 a month for dial-up service (28800 connection). My latest bill was $55.63 for Local (includes Area Calling Plan which is the only way that I can connect to my ISP (their server is long distance)), and $15.95 for unlimited internet access with Bellsouth.net. We actually have a local ISP (Iglou), but they limit me to 12 hours a day and have actually discontinued my service for using too much bandwidth before. The cable company, nor Bellsouth have any intentions of expanding their broadband service to my area.

On a better note...I'll be moving closer to the city soon and no longer give a crap.

For some reason that seems like it would be extremely easy to tap into for free or to intrude on someone elses information... since powerlines run to practically every building thats structurally stable and/or liveable.
