So I had the surgery last week. I have to say it's quite impressive. If any of you have been considering it and are scared or think its too expensive. Trust me, it's worth every cent.

The only nerd way I can explain it, is it would be like if someone went back to you in 1990, and showed you what 1080p looks like on a TV today, while you were used to VHS on a 13" Tube.

Lasers.
2009-02-16, 9:17 AM #3
Did it cost you $4000?

A guy here at work had that done a few years back. 4 years later, he's back to point A and needs to get glasses. :(

How old is he? The procedure does not prevent aging of the eyes and needing reading glasses later on. Sucks for him though. The only reason I did it is because my Dad had his done when it was still new (1996 or so) and still sees nearly flawless.

I'm more interested in getting implantable lenses. Easy to put in, easy to remove. No potential side effects that lasik has.

yea, you *shouldn't* get it while you're young, your eyes change shape over time and can totally **** the surgery

How is your night vision now?
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.
2009-02-16, 10:44 AM #12
The earliest suggested age is 21 I think, which I am. The only reason I got it now is because my eyes have not gotten much worse over the last couple years, so I think they are fairly stable. Could be wrong though.

Night vision is fine, I still have minor halo effects from lights but that is expected to go down as the healing completes. It may not be completely gone but it isn't really that bad to be honest.

I believe he was 30 at the time of his operation.

I think my eyes are too magled to get something like that.

Besides, I look an even bigger dork sans glasses.

30 isn't bad, what does he do for a living? I know a lot of people have the problem with losing their distant vision if they sit at a computer screen for 8+ hours a day. Since I have had this procedure, I will be making it a point to spend less time online. If I am using it, I will try to get it setup on my TV for some distance.

That's what I want to do if I ever manage to finish school. I think the only way to escape the punishment of a computer monitor or a tablet is to get a wacom tablet(or whatever) and a projector or a tv with a VGA/DVI input and just stay away from it.

wouldn't a projector be.. not so good of an idea when it comes to graphic arts, being that graphic arts is sometimes very color specific?

Indeed, right now I'm still using my calibrated viewsonic crt monitor because them bloody LCD's just don't quite cut it for my picky self.

I know for my part my distant sight has greatly degraded over the last 6 years. I'm still not wearing glasses and can see things perfectly fine for the most part, the only place I run into issues is reading road signs at night.

Yeah, it took me a long time to find LCDs suitable for me, and I'm not even a real designer. The Dell 2007FPs are what I have. Damn good color accuracy and contrast, with 16ms response times. S-IPS panels ftw :XD:

Unfortunately the really accurate LCDs cost in the thousands.

Indeed, and the one time that I suggested purchasing one to my boss, well lets just say I was nearly shot to death by EYEBALLS.

Seriously think I'd miss seeing glasses on my face, it's been a main part of my look since I was 9. I've actually thought about getting lasik or something and wearing fake glasses
2009-02-17, 7:06 AM #25
I can't stand wearing glasses. Or contacts. H8!

Glasses don't complement my face very well and contacts are annoying.

I used to wear glasses like 12 years ago for about a year. I looked like a chubby Harry Potter >.< Then my sight somehow got better on its own.

If you really was into graphic design, couldn't you just use a good flat-screen CRT?

Although CRTs with good resolution are very hard to find these days.

I use a CRT, yea. They are just annoyingly big. 1600x1200 resolution is perfectly fine.

A friend of mine was considering in trying to find a high-definition widescreen CRT for home viewing after bad experiences with dead pixels, ghosting, bad blacks and poor image quality from LCD screens he previously bought and returned. Sure the image quality is great, but a 30in CRT is MASSIVE.

If size didn't matter, a good 30in HD CRT would be around $600. Too bad no one sells them anymore. Even if LCDs are catching up, a good sized, top-of-the line CRT is much cheaper than a very good LCD.

I hope OLEDs will catch up to LCD in terms of price; I think you could get pretty good colour reproduction from them.
