Math Madness (forum game)
2009-02-19, 6:55 PM #1
((I don't quite have the time or resources to work on a game proposal while at work. However, I have just enough to continue making these weird forum games. Let's give this one a try!))

Math Madness [/B]

Objective: Be the first to reach exactly to 1,000,000,000 points (say it with me -- one billion points![ /Dr. Evil ] ), or closest to 1,000,000,000 within 7 days after the first post of the game.

How to Play:
Each player either adds, subtracts, multiplies, or divides the current total by the number of posts the player that previously posted currently has.

For example, let's say a new game of Math Madness has started. The current total is 0.

The next player to post -- we'll say CoolMatty -- takes note of my current post count (by hovering his cursor over the hex number under my username) and sees that, at that moment, I have 7,185. He then decides to add that number to the total and posts the following:
Quote:
Current total: 0
Gebohq's post count: 7,185

0 + 7,185 = 7,185

New total = 7,185

The next player -- we'll say Tracer -- then takes note of CoolMatty's current post count and notices that his current post count is 12,834. He decides to multiply that number with the new current total and posts the following:
Quote:
Current total: 7,185
CoolMatty's post count: 12,834

7,185 x 12,834 = 92,212,290

New post count = 92,212,290

And so on, and so on.

Rules:
1) You are not allowed to post two or more times in a row.
2) Should more than one person reply at relatively the same time, the person who posted first will be the accepted one and all the others will be ignored.
3) You are not allowed to divide if the result does not give you a whole number. EDIT: Round up or down if you do for this game.

Let the madness begin!

((Ignore this post for game purposes

Please try to use the format given in the examples above so that everyone knows whether you added, subtracted, etc. and to make sure we know who you're using for their post count and all that jazz. Otherwise this really WILL turn into madness, and not the good kind...))

7185 * 2737 = 19,665,345.

(This game will not last very long, I expect.)

Reaching that exact number? I guess it will last long.

((Apologies, but I've decided to add 1 extra rule:

You are not allowed to divide if the result does not give you a whole number.

As for JM's comment -- it'll last for 7 days, maximum. ;)

Again, ignore this post for gaming purposes.))

no rounding up/down? Most cases it will not be a whole number.

((As long as it's a whole number, it goes. Rounding up/down adds just a touch more complex-ness than I'm looking for. Ignore this post for gaming purposes blah blah blah...))

Ah, the joys of trying to get it right the first time -- never happens. ;) It'd probably take a few before I could find the magic ideal total for people to try and aim for, or maybe just requiring no multiplying/dividing. Oh well. Perhaps we'll get a divisible number in the next 7 days. >.>

I just made a copy paste mistake. The total was right.

821,354,649,937,744 / 3,203 = 256,432,922,241.

Screw your division rule, I rounded up. :colbert:

[EDIT: Wait I just realized that greenboy did it horribly, horribly wrong.]
DO NOT WANT.

We'll consider rounding an option for this current game.

Current total: 256,432,922,241
Zell's post count: 7,315

256,432,922,241 / 7,315 = 35,055,765 (rounded down)

New total: 35,055,765
The Plothole: a home for amateur, inclusive, collaborative stories

2009-02-19, 8:38 PM #16
Current total: 35,055,765
Geb's (It was a typo!) post count: 7,191

35,055,765 / 7,191 = 4874.9499374217772215269086357947 ==> Rounded up to 4875

(Guys, ADD to the smaller numbers and keep it around 15-20K)

An interesting (though probably NP-extremely-complete) problem would be to use a list of all users and postcounts and find exactly the right combination of users that need to post in this thread in order to reach the target in minimum number of posts. It would be like the knapsack problem, but with the added complication that any repetition of terms (users) would require the value (postcount) to increase by 1
