I think the disc drive in my X360 is dying. It's starting to hang up on DVDs and give that shotty look a cheap low quality distortion MPEG movie would.

Anyone know if you can just swap a drive in?

edit: apparently not, since they use 'special hitachi drives'... cheap turds.

a couple of days ago i asked XBOX HARDWARE SUPPORT for the name of the program manager responsible for NXE so i could accuse him of being a pedophile

Thank you for using XBOX Customer Support! I am May and I will be helping you today with this issue.

As I understand it, you would like to know who is the program manager of the NXE dashboard.

With regards to your concern, Microsoft have a set of team who handles updates for the improvement of all our Xbox 360 consoles. Unfortunately, we cannot divulge it over email.

I heard watching DVD's with your console can ruin it. May just be hearsay though.

You can replace the drive, theres a bunch of 360 mod sites floating around with instructions.
nope.

watching DVDs won't ruin your 360 but a $30 DVD player does a better job

Yeah, but then you can't really go online again with Xbox live. (and anyone listing so called "stealth mods" is probably wrong, don't trust them. Modded Xbox = No Live).

I know multiple people with modded xboxes on live...

Great story about that. I had a friend with a modded box, used the "stealth" firmware for the Drive. Apparently he was able to connect to live for quite a while, then MS did a mass banning. Not so stealthy after all.

Valve does the same thing, they don't ban all the cheaters/hackers right away, if they did people could tell really easy what can be detected and what can't. Instead they just sit on names, and ban some (but not all of them) in big waves of doom.

Just one story, YMMV.

Wrong and wrong.

I can't find any $30 players that upscale to 720, much less 1080p (the 360 does if you're hooked up via HDMI), and watching DVDs wears out the drive faster (Part of the reason they did the install thing with the new dashboard was because they wanted to cut down on that kind of thing), as all drives wear out with repeated use.

God I hate my boss at gamestop. He said "The PS3 is still a great buy because you still can't get a Blu-Ray Player for less than 3-400 bucks", and when I corrected him he cut me off, trying to denounce what I said, so I cut him right back the **** off and gave the customer the link to newegg. He's a ****ing tool, an idiot, and I hope he burns in hell.

Oh yeah, and rip off gamestop--for great justice.

Why even bother looking for one? TVs will scale it anyway, they do for a vast majority of sources already anyway.

not everyone has an HDMI xbox.... or a VGA input on their TV (or even an HDTV)

i should have mentioned i was specifically talking about the 360's non-upscaling playback... of the 3 devices hooked up to my TV that can play DVDs (PS3, Xbox 360, Toshiba HD-A20) the 360 is the worst at 480p

and also... i thought being :downswords: was a requirement to be a manager at gamestop

and CM... depends on the quality of the TV's scaler my TV's upscaling sucks

No, not everyone does, but the only reason the dvd player would be an issue is if you were looking for an upscaling DVD player. Also, my GM is awesome and pretty smart. Our 3rd key doesn't know much about the technical side of things, but at least admits it. Our ASM is just a ****ing toolbox who needs to choke on flaming dicks.

The only way I have found online that would make sense to not get banned on live is to purchase an exact matching unit for the xbox you have. As in, some models have Hitachi drives of various models and firmware, some have samsung, some have toshiba. My only hope will likely be getting a matching drive and replacing it myself. It just started doing minor hitches on the DVDs though, i am going to try cleaning the lens first. It has not given any issues with games yet.

How long of a warranty do these things have. Mine was made March 24, 2007. I'm hoping for a two year? *crosses fingers*

I haven't been able to find any clear statements on how long the warranty is and I do not really want to make a 30 minute call to microcrap helpline just to find out.

It's a one year warranty for the hardware (unless you have the 3 red light RROD, then it's 3 years). Accessories are 90 days.
2009-02-23, 6:30 AM #21
Poop.

edit: I guess I could follow my friend's advice and wrap it in a towel, play GTA until it RRoDs... but I'd rather not cause myself more stress.

My friends both had their XBoxs for more than a year, 3 year warranty from the manufacture date. Just send that ***** in takes about 2-3 weeks

3 year for the RRoD apparently not for cheap crappy internal hardware.

Have not yet... I REALLY wanted to avoid being on hold forever then talking to some guy who probably has had a few months of english lessons before trying to help me.

Well look, I'm telling you, my friend got his Box in Nov. of 07' the box was manufactured in the same year, his disc tray stopped reading discs indefinitely, called up XBox last month, they send him a box, he shipped it out, and they actually gave him an entirely new box. The other guy I don't know if his was over a year old, but same story.

Hmmm I dunno when mine was purchased. Also, I don't want to lose any info if they bring me a new box.

Ah ok, well the only thing I was worried about is the data. How does it work though because I know you cant swap HDDs on to different systems and play DLC... does MS do a live validation or something to the new console so all your old stuff works?

I've never had a problem with putting my HDD into another XBox and playing my DLC content, or anything for that matter. DLC's are registered to your gamer tag anyway, like if I recovered my account on someone elses drive, I can download any DLC I purchased onto their drive and watch/play it on my gamertag.
