What's up with AIM? Is this a virus?

I'm using an older version of AIM (5.9, before it got ****ty) and every now and then it will randomly open like a hundred instances of IE, all showing the particular ad that is currently in the AIM window. Won't stop unless I close AIM and re-open. Anybody get this?

Is it only on startup of aim or just in the middle of using it?

The reason I ask is because it might be some error when aim attempts to open up the "aim today" window, which by default is designed to be opened with IE, even when IE is not set as your default browser. Could be that, I do know "aim today" was still included in the 5.9 version.

Of course all that is assuming that it only occurs on startup and that you haven't disabled the "aim today" window from popping up.

People still chat on aim?

AIM is probably still one of the most popular chatting clients. However, I think a lot of people moved towards aggregation though clients like Pidgin and Adium.

Yeah. I use AIM and gChat daily and extensively (I actually use AIM for work, too), but I use Digsby to centralize everything.

AIM as a service is fine. There is no excuse for you to be using the AIM client though.

Check out: Trillian, Digsby, or Pidgin. They're the "big three" right now.

I found that those clients lacked alot of the features and options that the aim client offers, thus I use the adhacked version of aim.

I would have to try them again to tell you exactly.

Isn't pidgin the one that does not support picture sharing though? I know it didn't support something that was a major feature on aim.

Oh for god's sake people...you should all be banned.

It's not on startup, just in the middle of using it. Only happens about once a week or so. Seems to happen when I mouse-over the ad, but not always.

I'm still using Gaim. Never bothered to switch over to Pidgin when they did.

Dash:

I know how annoying it is to have people tell you to use something else when you ask for help with something you're currently using, but ... I'd really encourage you to use Digsby (or Trillian or Pidgin) >_<
