Avon Breast Cancer Walk
2009-03-01, 3:06 PM #1
Long story short, I signed up for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. It's a two day walk that takes place between May 16th & 17th. You are given a choice between walking a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles). I am going to walk the entire 39.3 miles, and as much as I hate asking people favors, I'm going to ask all of you a favor anyhow.

Up until I got my little packet in the mail, I figured that by paying the $65 entrance fee I was good to go....NOT. I came across this little bit of information today.

"Q: As a Walker, how much money do I have to raise in order to participate in the Avon Walk?

A: Each Walker commits to raising a minimum of $1,800 in donations."

So by May 15th, I need to raise $1.8k or else I am not allowed to walk. I know everyone is broke, and I know that this economy is a wasteland right now, and I know I'm just above/under Tiberium/Gold in terms of how much I am liked here, but if you yourself cannot donate, I would appreciate it if you could spread the word to your family and friends, or anyone else that could possibly donate towards this cause. Every little bit helps, and I am greatly appreciative of all of you for donating, thinking of donating, or even just reading this.

Thank You,
Jon (SAJN)

P.S. I'm going to start 'training' (a.k.a. actually using my legs for walking) for this event over my Spring Break (starting this friday), so if anyone wants to meet up with me for lunch or something, I'll be spending most of my week walking around boston, not doing much of anything.

P.S.S. If you read this and even thought the tinniest bit about singing up for this event, I strongly recommend it...Plus, then we can walk 40 miles together! YEAH! *freeze frame high five*

I'm not fond of these charity marathons. You seriously have to pay to walk? I thought the donations came from advertisements or something within the event.

That's the way things like this always work.
Though usually, they don't tell you to screw off you don't get an obsene figure like 1,800 bucks.

You have to pay to be in a charity walk? That doesn't really make much sense.. I thought the advertisers are where the money came from, and 1.8k is a really sizable amount of money. I could understand if it was like, 50-100 bucks but that's just insane.

Yea.. that's what makes it a charity. Usually it's a person representing a group or groups that all donated to him/her. Like let's say I wanted to run, I'd go to businesses and ask them to donate money for me to run for cancer. They'd get their name with a good cause. And I'd run ... probably donating a lot less money than them.

I duno. I kinda of think that Brest cancer is a bit disproportionately represented for me to ever commit that much to it, unless I personally knew someone who suffered from it. Even then, there are worse cancers, and illness for that matter.

For a walk, they should really just take what they can get.

You have to raise that much money BECAUSE. Moving on.
