This thread is a bit late but I was wondering if anyone is using lent as an excuse to try giving something up this year. I realise that america tends to have more of an experience with catholicism than anything else so I have no idea if this is even relevant, especially since most of you aren't christian; but hey, most of you still do christmas.

:P

I'm giving up crisps just to see if I can kick my mild addiction. :awesome:

I'm also attempting to live without something else but I'm keeping that card close to my chest. :ninja:
nope.

I think maybe instead of giving up something, I should try something new.

I'll never be able to keep it up though. You really have to care, and I just don't.

Giving up something for Lent isn't too difficult, since Sundays aren't part of Lent.

Now, if you smoke 2 packs a day and give up smoking -- that's something else.

I'm fairly sure the sunday thing depends on the church.
nope.

I'd considered cutting back on Internet use and TV when I was reminded about Lent on Fat Tuesday, but I'm not following through seriously. I'm a bum.

That's true. There's really two ways Lent is celebrated. It either:

-Starts Ash Wed., excludes Sundays and lasts longer.

or:

-Starts Clean Mon. (tomorrow), includes Sundays and is shorter.

I guess it's technically the same amount of fasting...but the first is spread out a little. :P

I'm not drinking soda, and I'm only listening to Christian music for during Lent. Not that I really do Lent for any particular belief; it was simply an excuse to do it.

Err, Lent isn't exclusively catholic. :hist101:

Officially I'm Presbytarian, but I'm really just cheerfully agnostic. :P

Lent is a Jewish practice, by the way.

I always say I'm giving up lent for lent.

yeah I'm not doing it. I can't even remember to not eat meat on Fridays. I'll just vow to work extra hard on my thesis during Lent. I don't think it's the same, but screw it.

This would, after all, be more in line with what the Bible has to say about the subject.
