I think Mario Kart 64 was the best one of all time... Blue Turtle Shells just dominate.

Meh, I liked double dash. The wii version isn't bad but I'm not a big fan of the motorcycles. I'm glad they're being more creative with their tracks and there are more of them. I don't think it's the most influential video game ever, though, I think that would go to DOOM which spawned an entire genre, or maybe zelda.

Mario Kart DID spawn an entire genre of kart racing games. Quite a few other companies have tried to use the idea.

That list is all over the shop. WTF did the Orange Box influence? It's amazing value, and my Best Purchase of Last Year but it's not a game - it's a bundle!

If it's half life 2, say half life 2.

(Oh, and Reading TFA tells me it's CONSOLE games. Bah.)

I'd go with Zelda. There hasn't been a crappy Zelda game since Zelda II

There is so much wrong with that list I don't even know where to start.

Blue shell was terrible. 3 red shells were much better. If you were even remotely in range, you could assure yourself a victory with them.

Mario Kart 64 did have the best shortcut of any racing game ever though. Jumping off the side of the track at the beginning of rainbow road to fall for a good 15 seconds onto a much later portion of the track was just totally :awesome:.

Wolfenstein 3D was clearly the most influential.

Sure it wasn't the FIRST FPS, but it was the first GOOD one.

That shortcut was as risky as it was great. If you landed it, you were miles ahead, but if you missed it, you were about equally as far behind.

What a horrible list.

It's console games, that's why.

That and the list was compiled by cretins.

Why the **** is Final Fantasy XII up there?

I fail to see where it had ANY lasting influence.
nope.

Atleast Blue Shell was somewhat useful in Mario Kart 64. In later games, it only affects the player in the lead. Why? If I'm 7th place, why would I care about just hitting the 1st player...

Still, MK64 holds a warm spot to my heart. There were so many little tricks and shortcuts that made the gameplay fairly deep. Too bad it was also the buggiest Mario Kart game; you could blow up another player and send him clipping through a wall and off into oblivion.

Should have been VII.

Also as far as mario kart goes, I prefer the gamecube version. Co-op is an absolute blast on that.

VII is there, just much further down.
nope.

FFXII wasnt even worth finishing and I used to be a die-hard FF fan... these days I've given up on Square-Enix (IMO they havent been worth a damn since they were Squaresoft) and migrated to Atlus. Atlus is amazing, they even interact with the fans to see what they do and don't like. Plus the spoils program is sweet.

I'm sorry, but you're all kinds of wrong. FFXII by far had the most engaging, deep, adult story in a final fantasy game to date. All previous games are childish romps through fantasty worlds, with simplistic, black and white stories about good conquering evil, yadda yadda.

XII was full of political intrigue, characters based on shades of grey, rather than a more simplistic view of a game. It actually had some great dialogue, amazing set pieces, engaging combat and characters. It's not an "influential" game, by any stretch of the imagination, but it is by far the pinnacle of the FF series.

This is from an industry insider's point of view.

It doesn't matter if you enjoyed it or not, that's not what the list is about.

Please, it was just a rehash of star wars.

Yeah but any good ones? I literally can't name another good kart racing game. I can name a crappy one, nicktoons racing, because my stepson has it, but it totally sucks. I played BC racers back in the day on WINDOWS 95.
2009-03-05, 3:39 PM #24
Crash Team Racing.

It was better than any Mariokart game.
nope.

Non of the kart racing games are good. fun maybe but lets not take it too far

You have to be kidding me. Mario kart is the most influential game? Like some of you guys mentioned, what about Wolfteinstein? Doom? Half Life? Super Mario should be higher along with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. The original Zelda?
2009-03-05, 6:07 PM #27
Consoles only, doom 64 wasn't very influential

Doom was released on consoles, and several games in the list were on pc too.
nope.

The list is based off consoles though

...I don't understand your point.
nope.

Here's what's wrong with this list:

1. "ranked both on their importance and on how fun they are to play." (A list of the most influential video games should be based entirely on how influential they are. How much fun they are should not factor into it at all.)

2. It's only console games. There's no logical reason to exclude computer games from this list.

3. It isn't about how much they influenced games that followed, so much as how influential the games were on gaming culture/industry/market, which isn't as interesting.
I'm just a little boy.

Thats why Wolfenstein, or half-life aren't on there, just orange box because of it's console release.

What

VI and VII are the exact opposite of what you're talking about (VI moreso ... suicide and teenage pregnancy and identity crises and feelings of psychologically-crippling guilt from watching your family getting dragged off to death and not doing anything about it?)

The last FF game that was like what you're talking about = IV (and IX because that was supposed to be a return to the 'old' FF)

Also, I too am on the MK64 = best side of the fence. The shortcut "glitches" were awesome. Not just the Rainbow Road one. The Wario Stadium one, too. And I think there was one on Peach's Turnpike as well.

I miss those old games that had glitches in them that were so fun to exploit :( All the glitches now are just boring and pointless.

^^^

Also Street Racer on the Genesis/MegaDrive.

Ok, so it was a second rate Mario Kart Ripoff, but it was fun :(
