Can't create a new folder in Windows 7's start menu
2009-03-08, 6:10 PM #1
Well actually I can create a new folder in the start menu, I just can't rename it for some reason. Every time I try to rename the folder with some name other than "New Folder," I'll have the error:

Quote:
The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program

Close the folder or file and try again.

How do I get around this issue? Would be nice if I can reorganize my start menu....

Change the name from the source?

As in renaming the folder after it's created? I obtain the error above when I try to do that.

not tried this, but here's my idea

explorer probably has the folder locked, so if you get task manager open, end process on explorer, use the browse dialog on the run box in task manager to find and rename the folder, then run explorer.exe again, that should work.
gbk is 50 probably

MB IS FAT

Or just use Process Explorer to force the handle closed.

It's long-standing glitch in Explorer where it leaks folder handles. Or might be caused by a third-party add-on, who knows.

Sudo is some Linux command prompt command isn't it? Anyhow, I'll look into what NoESC and Mega-ZZTer suggested. Thank you.

Wait... misread your problem. Try disabling your anti-virus real time protection (same for anti-malware IE Windows Defender) and search indexing (IE Windows Search). Such programs will jump on newly-created files and folders and may lock them from changes while they are scanning.

Otherwise it could still be a troublesome third party shell extension. Autoruns will help you disable those.

Autoruns? I did a search on this issue not too long ago and some other users of Windows 7 seem to have this same problem. I already tried all of the listed strategies, but they don't seem to work for me. Creating, renaming, and moving a folder from my desktop to the start menu doesn't seem to work either.
