I Feel Old
2009-03-13, 7:59 PM #1
As a lot of you probably aren't aware considering you always seem to think I'm older, I'm 19. Now, I'm sure most of you agree that this is pretty young but I'm starting to make myself feel old; I've been sitting here at my laptop and nursing a hangover whilst listening to some Britpop [I know], and its dawning on me that I genuinely feel nostalgic about the 1990s.

It might just be my sorry state of affairs at the moment [If you visit that chat I'm sure you know the long and short of it], but I really do think that the 90s just seemed like a better time. To focus on the better aspects of the decade, I really miss music on the radio that was heavily influenced by 60s Psychedelica - Primal Scream, Kula Shaker and Black Grape. Stepped haircuts, Top of the Pops, Harry Enfield being genuinely funny and Smack My ***** Up. Baggy clothing that didn't involve jeans with a belt below your posterior, Disney Films that were actually good, and Riesen Chocolate Chews. I miss a time when most people didn't have computers, when I didn't know what the internet was and a time before mobile phones. I miss when people didn't have fullblown political correctness and doom-mongering thrust upon them and when parents weren't so intent in wrapping everything in bubblewrap that their children actually had a chance to have fun and experience things for themselves.

I guess I'm probably feeling this way because its been almost 10 years since the 90s and that much has changed, but at the moment I find it hard to believe that one day I'll look back on the current decade and feel a similar way.

Ok now I have to apologise for the blogginess of this post but I started writing and I guess it spewed forth. Anyway, please post things that you miss or make you feel nostalgic.

And please, lets not just post nothing but early 90s cartoons and other tv, we've done that just under 2000 times. :P
nope.

Watched Fight Club again recently and in one scene there's a storefront with the oldschool rainbow colored Apple logo. That really took me back. Because of the nature of the film there isn't much that really dates it until you see something like that.

Let's see, the 1990s had Freakazoid.

Instant decade-win.

Wait, you haven't even seen the 80's? The 80's sucked, but Kurt Cobain didn't like the 90's either. :suicide:

I can't remember much of the '90s.

Aside from, for some reason, the hand over of Hong Kong to China. And Midlands bank before it became HSBC.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I just turned 23 a few months ago, I feel old. I've battled depression and severe anxiety. A couple weeks ago I spent a week and a half in the psych ward of the local hospital because I had a total nervous breakdown. That kind of crap left me completely mentally exhausted, and I feel like I aged ten years in the past one. So I know where you're coming from when you say you feel old.

The best thing you can do is strop trying to hang onto the past and just try to enjoy the present. It sounds simple and sappy, but it's really the only way to live and lead a happy life.

Oh, and if you like things about the 90s, you can still incorporate them into your life. Who cares if something is out of fashion? Fashion is cyclical, we're revisiting the 80s in a lot of ways now, so if you go with the 90s you'll be ahead of the curve ;)

Oh I know that, I've been waiting for Grunge to be popular again for a while now.

Good post. :)

I don't really feel that old TBH but the fact that some things that were the norm a few years ago are now in the past is quite weird for some reason. Currently my mind is fixated on 2006 which was like 3 years ago and at the time I was at high school, frequented #massassi every day, edited DX, played some latest games of the time (Prey comes to mind right now) and waited for Bioshock!

Doesn't feel like it was that long ago but since I keep thinking about it I suppose it does feel like it was. No wonder I never get anything done if I keep remembering the past and thinking how swell it'd have been to have those things done back then. Bah.

And vaguely on-topic, I guess at the moment I somewhat reminisce the early 2000s (especially 2002-2003) more fondly than other periods of thyme. Hm!

I feel old. About a year ago while in subway line the lady in front of me asked me a question about my kids :suicide: (Though my friends that have kids are 2-3 years younger than me, and a ton of young people do have kids, still, WTF lol) It wasn't "Do you have any kids?" It was "Do your kids play on the peewee team?"

You miss your "innocence" (ignorance), not the 90s per se, maybe.

I know what you're on about.

At this age it kind of feels like your life is in cement. Just feels like it's all going to be rather predictable and (whilst fun at the time) boring in the end.

Quite true. "Losing all hope is freedom" in it's own way, and learning to let go of the past really does change your life. It's just impossible to see before it happens.

You're so old. Geezer!
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

I feel the same way with the Matrix. I find myself saying "is this movie really ten years old? **** me."

I have the opposite problem baco, I feel like I just graduated and it was a few years ago.
