My dog is seriously ill.
2009-03-16, 10:34 AM #1
Yesterday my dog (Zena, A Sheltie) started panting and shivering non-stop. She was tied up and was going to be brought to the vet today, However last night she started making strange gurgly howling noises and was visibly in pain. She was taken to the emergency vet and they diagnosed her with either a tumor in her bladder, or bladder stones. There is a good chance that next time she has to go to the vet she will have be put down.

She seems happy right now. she's on painkillers, and everyone gets to say goodbye before she (Most probably, chances are slim) goes away sometime this week.

Bummer. Sorry I can't offer more condolences, but all of my pets have either been stolen, 'ran away', taken to the pound against my will, ran over by a school bus, or poisoned. So... I don't even try anymore.

awe im sorry. i know how it feels to lose a pet you love. when i was younger my old neighbor killed my dog. and we had to put my other dog down because she was so old she could barely walk or eat. she was about 16 or 17 years old.
I'm proud of my life and the things that I have done, proud of myself and the loner I've become.

I'm sorry, man. That really sucks. I've been through it myself, though I was quite a bit younger when it happened. :(

Poor baby....:(

My first dog passed away from something similar. If its operable, theres a good chance she may in fact make it. Mine had bladder stones the size of skipping stones, they removed them, and she was with me for another 7 years. Prepare yourself, but in the same respect don't give up just yet.

News- We called the vet and he said that an ultrasound to find out just what is wrong would cost $700, we simply don't have that right now. She is going to be put to sleep on the 24th. Untill then she will be on painkillers and will be loved very much.
She will have been 10 years old in a month.
Thank you for your sympathy.

You can't pull $700 together throughout your family to help your dog? Really? I understand not everyone is doing well financially right now, but I'd easily take on the debt to help my dog.

700 dollars JUST for the ultrasound is a large expense, especially for a pet that is nearing the end (10 years) of a normal lifespan. I know how you feel, but... :/

i was going to say something but i'll only be flamed for it.

Yeah, Adding to the fact that it had cost $500 just to take her in yesterday and the fact that it is most likely going to cost even more for a slight chance at fixing whatever is wrong.

My dog died last summer, had a tumor in his neck... we could have paid for the operation, but they really had no guess as to whether it would be successful, or how long he would live afterward. It would have been expensive, too. We did basically the same thing TE did, put him on painkillers while we tried to decide... in the end, he died here (at home) before we could.

This is why I have doggy insurance. As much as I love the *****, if she's not covered and I don't have the cash, she's going to die. There's a point where you have to realize that as much as we like to pretend dogs are people, and we can think of them like our children, they are really just dogs, and are replaceable in a way children are not.

The best thing anyone who loses a dog can do is go get another dog.

Our dog will be 16 years old this summer. It's really going to suck when Duncan is gone.

Condolences, TE

My cat died in a nearly similar way with diabetes instead. It's really sad, but be thankful you get to say goodbye to her. I had a few amazing moments with her where she showed us all a lot of unusual affection, and was surprisingly cooperative at the vet. She knew her time was up, I honestly think. Why else would a usually psychotic scratching ball of evil go peacefully with the vet strangers?

So give your puppy a long goodbye and make sure she knows how much you care. :(

Edit: Sorry, didn't see that she'd already been put down :(
