Reid: Install wine, you can run many windows apps under linux.

I installed Ubuntu in VirtualBox for the first time yesterday. It was freakin awesome. I then tried to get a Compiz-style multiple desktop going so that I could have Ubuntu fullscreen/seamless on one desktop and Vista on another, but alas, there are no good ones for Vista :(

Reid: Some alternatives to wine are CrossOver (they were giving it away for free a few months ago), or, if you have your Windows CD / an extra key maybe, run Windows as a guest in VirtualBox an do what I was trying to do except with real Compiz :awesome:

Compiz probably won't work well in a VM unless maybe you use the 3d virtualization in the latest VirtualBox 2.2.0 beta. Haven't tried that yet.

No I mean Compiz on the host OS, not the guest, and then Fullscreen or Seamless the VM so it feels like you're running two OSes at once, switchable by virtual desktop.

Oh I thought you meant Vista was the host OS from what you were saying.

I enjoyed ubuntu too but, i didn't see how it was anymore efficient. The same tasks usually take about the same about of clicks, and mouse movements. And I find that 'performance' wise, windows XP is better, on a low-end machine, so I dont find the efficiency astounding

Come back in a month and tell me if you're still using Ubuntu there, Reid.

Oh yeah, I did mean Vista was the host for myself -- what I meant was that I was trying to get a Compiz-style multiple desktop going in Vista (not the virtualized Ubuntu) so that I could run Ubuntu fullscreen on another desktop and switch back and forth.

What I was suggesting for Reid though was the reverse (Ubuntu host, run multiple desktops and fullscreen Vista on one of the desktops)

Like the people above wrote, we'll see if you are still using it in a month. All the minor annoyances add up and you will eventually switch back.

My second rig (which I really haven't found a purpose for, other than staying connected when my main is down) runs ubuntu with blackbox.

Something screws up, be it drivers, packages, incompatible windows software, whatever, and becomes such a huge pain in the *** that you realize "why in the world am I using this crap" and switch back to Windows.
