Anyone here have one? I was looking at the Acer Aspire One a bit yesterday, seems hard to beat for the price. Replaced my 13.3 laptop with a 15.4, and I another smaller one for networking jobs and such, and just to use around the house.

Anything better out there I should check out?

Ew Acer. I will always avoid Acer like the plague. I assume you've looked at Asus and Dell?

My Asus EEE PC is the early model, and I still love it. I highly suggest an EEE with EEEBuntu on it. Best computing experience I've ever had. If you get one of the newer models, the speed is equal to a laptop, and the battery is a lot better. Get an external drive and you're set. Keep the external in your car or backpack and the netbook becomes really sensible.

The only thing I might wait for is an Asus with 3G, but I haven't really been paying attention. Mine is exactly what I need it for. Note taking, e-mail, and homework web-surfing. The only complaint I'd have is the keyboard: EVEN with my small hands, it's very different. They've moved a lot of keys around to make everything fit, and it doesn't feel right even after months of using it. If I didn't use my normal keyboard so often, it might be easier to adjust to.

The asus and dell cost more, and have an 8gig ssd. acer has a 160gb hdd.

Also, the 3g isn't an issue as I'll just be tethering my iPhone.

I have an ASUS EeePC 1000H. It's a 10" with 6 cell battery, 80gb hdd, and WinXP Home. The keyboard does take a little bit of getting used to, although it's not bad. I paid $450 when I bought it.

I have a friend that has the Acer Aspire One. It's not quite as nice as mine, but the keyboard layout is closer to that of a laptop. It's already had a few problems, however, and she's only had it since December.

I'll look around and see if I can find one of those local, was planning on picking up something tomorrow. I do enough business with the electronics places around town (buying parts for work) that they will let me take it back without a fee if I don't like it.

I don't use it as much as I'd like to, but I've enjoyed using my Dell Mini. But like everyone's been saying, the keyboard has a bit of a learning curve.

One downside though is that it only comes with XP Home. I installed Professional on it after I got it.

I never knew about netbooks until like a month ago. I walk in best buy looking for speakers, and I go to check out the computers. (They had an alienware there too, wtf they have this really lame flimsy plastic case) ... I saw this thing and was like "Is that a computer!?!" haha.

They are cool. When this laptop dies I'll probably get one. (And by then hopefully they have bigger HDs)

I purchased one of these for our company last week for testing. For what some of our field techs use them for (checking email and doing timesheets), $350 is a lot better then the $1100 we're paying for Dell laptops. Plus Dell laptops have been slipping in quality. Dell Business services have started to suffer also as late. The last purchase I made with them, they quoted some of the parts at full retail price (undiscounted, so more than what a normal user would pay). Then they broke up the order into three shipments, which would be fine, but they let one monitor hold up the entire last shipment (which included parts for our VP and spare batteries that were needed by our executive staff).

Sorry. I needed to vent about Dell a little.

The best models out right now are widely considered the EEE 1000HE, HP Mini 2140 (the business-class one w/ the aluminum shell), HP Mini 1000 ("Consumer" version of the previous), and the Samsung NC10. These all have all the standard features + some niceties of their own, absurdly long batterly life (up to 10 hrs in real use for the 1000HE I think), plus (most importantly) USABLE, nearly full-sized (the HP Minis actually do have full-sized) keyboards.

Also the MSI Wind series (especially the refreshes).

The biggest plague of the earlier netbooks (especially the EEEs, which they've finally fixed) was crappy small keyboard with shrunkey right shift key placed to the RIGHT of the up-arrow key.

I'd like to get one to supplement my MacBook as a sort of "hackbook". I'd put linux on it with a bunch of security related tools. It's one of my "when I have the cash" type purchases.

Incidentally a lot of netbooks (especially the Wind(s)) are excellent OSX86 machines if you're into that kinda thing >_>

Get a Dell 9 then put OS X on it

Dell is actually discontinuing the Mini 9 because people *****ed about its small odd keyboard and as a result didn't buy it after they heard about the 12 and the 10 (which just came out).

I'd probably dual boot if it was really easy to install OS X.

Really? I'm on a dell 9 forum (although I barely check it now) and a lot of people that ordered new keyboards after spilling or something happening to their board were given new ones that had proper key placement. I just figured they'd use the new keyboard for future models.
