RPGs... all the same?
2009-03-24, 12:24 PM #1
I just thought about it, and I can't off the top of my head think of an RPG that didn't have a antagonist that is later revealed to not be the ultimate protagonist...

Ones I can think of:

Chrono Trigger: Magus before Lavos
Final Fantasy VII: Shinra/Sephiroth before Jenova.
Final Fantasy X: Seymour & Sin before that thing inside sin.
Super Mario Bros: LOTSS: Bowser before Smithy
Persona 3: 12 Shadows before Nyx/Death
Luminous Arc 2 (havent finished yet): Master Mattias before Bharva

I'm sure there is more... but I can't think of them right now, im in RPG overload...

I just want to find one thats straight up "here is the bad guy, figure out what to do, kill it."

does oblivion count as an rpg?

Yes, just not the same type of RPG. I'd call it a Sandbox RPG. Or Open-Ended RPG. Or Free-Roaming RPG.

Games like FF and Chrono I'd call Japanese RPG. Or Console RPG.

But that's just me

er.. you fight jenova absolute before you fight sephiroth for the last time....

Yeah but in the story terms, sephiroth is not the ultimate enemy. Besides, sephiroth was way easier IMO than Jenova...

I played Oblivion, and it was good, but I don't really consider it an RPG... Seemed more like an action/adventure to me.

I haven't played KOTOR but I should. I know.

Most games tend to have a character that you play.

Thus all the games are pretty much the same to me.

In Baldur's gate you become attacked by the main boss as you leave the first area. The game ends with killing him.

In Baldur's Gate II you start by being tortured by the bad guy. You end the game by killing him.

Stop playing JRPGs

You don't really think at all, do you? You just say things and claim you thought about them.

Final Fantasy 1: Garland / Chaos. Antagonist since your first battle.
Final Fantasy 2: The Emperor (Dark / Light Sides). Antagonist from the beginning
Final Fantasy 4: True, Zemus controls Golbez
Final Fantasy 5: Exdeath. Antagonist after the crystals fade.
Final Fantasy 6: Kefka. Antagonist from the beginning
Final Fantasy 8: Ultimecia.. It's revealed half way through that it's not Edea, but it doesn't fit your criteria
Final Fantasy 9: True, Necron after Kuja
Final Fantasy X: Yu Yevon is always the ultimate protaganist. The battle with Seymour and Sin is known not to be the final battle, it's just to get through to fight Yu Yevon. And if you say it's just "that thing", it shows you really have no idea what's going on.
Final Fantasy XI: Each arc tends to have an ultimate antagonist. The Shadow Lord, Eald'Narche and Kam'lanaut, etc.

Not to say they aren't all the same, but with Chrono Trigger and Mario RPG, you always knew they were the main antagonists, it's just that Magus and Bowser might have been thought to play a bigger role.

Remembering the name of the final boss != memorizing a game. :suicide:
