Firefly/Serenity revisited
2009-04-04, 6:07 PM #1
So this week I rewatched the Firefly series (for the second time) and today I watched Serenity again (also 2nd time).

I thoroughly enjoyed the (short) series. However, I thought the movie was a let down and didn't have the magic/spark the show did. One of the things I liked the best about the show was the sense of humor - which was missing most of the movie. Sure, there were a few humerous moments, but nothing like the show.

[Here's where the flame war will begin.] I thought Summer Glau was totally unbelievable as a fighter in the movie. "Unbelievable" as in "I didn't believe it". Every fight scene with her seemed so ... I dunno... fake? Sure, I know her movements are supposed to be similar to dance or ballet, but it just didn't seem believable to me.

Also, am I the only one that noticed that wounds that would kill a normal person didn't stop Mal? I'm thinking "Ok, he's a cylon..." :awesomelon:

And Zoey didn't seem too upset about Wash's death. Sure she did the "revenge thing", but I guess I was expecting a bit more emo from her, like the episode where Mal and Wash are tortured by that German dude.

Anyway, Serenity did seem to be the final call for the Firefly crew. Especially without Wash or Book.

The space battle between the Reavers and the Alliance was freaking awesome, though.

The humor was lacking due to the seriousness of the plot. Lots of humor would not have fit.

Well I thought Rivers moves were totally bad ***.
Of course it's unbelievable... so what?
Somehow they travel huge distances without FTL travel ... that's unbelievable.
A highly trained killing machine beating up some guys ... that's not that big of a deal.

Zoey seems pretty unemotional to me overall ... She's the type of person to hide her emotions and keep on trucking.

Zoey is a soldier and they were in the middle of a battle. Her behavior was about right.

i didnt like the missing characters. I thought the crew as a whole was what made the show. Stripping them out seemed like it changed the whole atmosphere. Book and Inara provided a lot of comic relief.

I think that show could have become something like Star Wars if Fox hadn't ruined it.

Ok, maybe unbelievable isn't the right word. Maybe clumsy? I expected to see the wires half the time she was fighting groups and when she was wielding swords and such... I dunno... didn't look like they spent enough time with her in training.

I don't think it was a very high budget film- I could be wrong..

Wasn't there supposed to be a book about Book? I seem to recall that being brought up on a commentary somewhere.

This is ironic. I just watched Firefly for the first time in 4ish years this week.

I loved the show and the movie. I missed Inara when she left, too, but not enough for it to ruin the experience. I thought the movie was a fitting end, my only real gripe was that stupid mr. universe character, that was moronic. It reminded me of Johnny Mnemonic.

Wash dying wasn't funny enough for you?

I agree with you about the fight scenes...IIRC there were a bunch of throat punches. That would hurt.

Serenity was lacking a little compared to the series (fortunately I watch the movie first, which made it more enjoyable)
But it's understandable why, the show got axed (philistines) and they needed to do a kind of summary film, Serenity was the result.

It was still a great movie, but it had a brilliant show to be compared to.

I, too, watched Firefly and Serenity for the first time a couple of weeks ago. A girl in work let me borrow her Serenity DVD after we got to talking about sci-fi, and I really enjoyed it. Then I borrowed my housemate's Firefly DVDs and absolutely adored the whole series. Now I'm so enamoured with both that I can't think of a single criticism to make about either. I also picked up a copy of "Those Left Behind", one of the comic books that explains what happens between Firefly and Serenity.

The one thing I will say is that I wish I'd watched the series first, since it would've made the film make a bit more sense and I would've cared more about the characters who died.

Oh, and the soundtrack is brilliant, too. I think the music is definitely a big part of the whole experience, which is odd for me because I generally don't pay as much attention to the score as I did for Firefly.

The film's plot wasn't significant enough. Look, the alliance created the reavers!! Oh noes!! Okay, now what? Who cares? It was like an extended episode more than a feature film.

Fixed.

Anyway, yeah, I thought more or less the same about the reavers revelation. Although it's a cool idea, it didn't seem that important.
