Does anyone make their own jerky?

I've been wanting to make my own jerky.
It seems pretty simple .. cut the beef into slices ... marinate it ... dehydrate it..
But before I foolishly buy a dehydrator and expensive spices to marinate .. anyone have any experience with this?

Know any good recipes?

I'm pretty sure 97% of the people here make their own jerky, if you know what I mean.

My dad will make jerky on occasion. The method he used before we got a dehydrator was just putting it in the oven and just baking it on a lower heat for a day or so

I bought a packet once, it was okay. Too much effort to eat for me to make it into a regular snack.

I love jerky. Thought about making my own before but it seems like a lot of effort for something I could probably buy pre-made for cheaper.

My dad makes his own biltong which is similar to American jerky. I don't know what your dehydrators look like but we use a simple acrylic box with a small perspex window attached. Inside is a lightbulb to keep it hot and dry and a pair of small computer fans to maintain air flow. We hang the meat from thin bars that slot in the top.

  • Always take care not to leave your strips touching each other.
  • Experiment as much as possible early on with your marinade. We had problems getting the saltiness just right.
  • If you have pets, make sure what ever you're using has a decent lid. The smell of biltong drying sends our cat a little crazy.

Apparently my lack of jerking killed this thread.

Mmm jerky is great, too expensive to buy most of the time. It's like $8 for a few ounces.

Which is why I was thinking of making my own. Even with the beef + marinade I bet it would be a lot cheaper.

Jerky is awesome work food. When you're out away from the house working, just keep a bunch of jerky in your pocket.

My dad just started making some because he got a dehydrator for christmas. So far he's only used store-bought seasoning, but he wants to make his own.

Jerky is expensive as hell here, but teriyaki jerky is delicious.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

It's expensive everywhere.
