Where can I find one of those ball compasses that pitch, roll, and yaw?

I want one for my car. I've shopped around and all I can find are aircraft compasses that show heading, but do nothing regarding one's pitch or roll. I'm hoping for one that can actually show my pitch/roll somewhat quantitatively, 5, 10, 15 degrees or whatever. Does such a device even exist? Don't see why it wouldn't....

Maybe try and include the word gimbal in your search. I think that's their proper name. Best people to ask might be Evad or Brian though - I think they have experience in that sort of field.

my dad used to have separate pitch and yaw indicators on his truck but they weren't actually attached to his compass. It was years ago though, I couldn't tell ya where he got it. I'd imagine probably a car parts store like Lordco (Assuming that company is in the states)

uhh, why do you need such a device?

and the reason that you wont find them is that they need power to work, and quite likely need to be professionaly installed if you hope to get any accurate readings off it.

there are devices that measure your pitch and yaw sorta like how a level works when you're building a shelf or whatever.

If you're looking for a full out gauge, Alpha's right, you'll be hard pressed to find what you're looking for off-the-shelf

those dont seem to give actual measurements for pitch and yaw though.

Meh, near enough ;)

Why would roll be of concern? I mean, sure, you can say "oh, this hill is at an angle of fifteen degrees" but I think you'd be in a little trouble if you were rolling by that much.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

They let you know how fast you're going round corners :P

You could get one or two pieces of avionics: a turn coordinator for yaw and an artificial horizon for pitch and roll. That would be kind of expensive though.

It would be hella expensive.

I was talking about aircraft instruments.. which are incredibly expensive?

I don't think you even install half of the cooler aircraft stuff on a car without ridiculous amounts of fabrication. Either way, I don't see why you need roll, pitch, or yaw in a car.

Thankfully we don't actually talk like that here.

I seriously doubt he has like $700 to use on a gauge he can't even use.
2009-04-08, 6:41 PM #18
That raises a question. What possible use is it to you knowing how many degrees your car is pitching/rolling?

Here's an even more important question.

Romjae. Are you Wolvie17?

Here is one with pitch and roll.

for 15 dollars, the thing probably doesnt even have a gyroscope in it, which is vital if you want any accuarcy.

ah, there's your reason - it's for off-roading. who looks stupid now?
2009-04-08, 10:09 PM #24
and again, I say that for 15 dollars, it is not going to be very accurate.

Does it need to be? Who's got time to look at it intently when you're bouncing along a river bed?
2009-04-09, 5:16 AM #26
if you are bouncing, then you dont need it, also, if you are bouncing, a non gyroscopic one will be even less accurate than normal, that and if you are bouncing, you dont need one as if you are bouncing and go over the limit, you WILL be rolling.

... I have never needed anything like that for off roading.

If you have ABS, your car has a fore-aft G-sensor. If you have any kind of stability control, you have a yaw rate sensor and a lateral-G sensor.

Are you looking to just log the info? I don't know of any vehicle-dynamics control systems that account for roll.

Its a 2-decade old chevy with multiple colors and a small block V8. I have no true reason for having this device, (not that my reasons are anybodies business ANYWAY....) I just thought it would be a fun novelty item.
2009-04-10, 10:31 PM #31
On the contrary, I believe you'll find your reasons are *entirely* our business good sir
