I hate this thing now. I fixed the stupid disc error (to the best of my knowledge). Now it's doing this wierd freeze up thing (during play, in the menus, and once it starts, it wont even get past the X-Sphere pulse screen.)

It looks to me like an overheating graphics card with the way the screen freezes and has a lot of green and red artifacts on the screen. Kinda like back in the day when you'd get the NES carts to somewhat load but there would be wierd squares of color in places it didnt belong.

I'm not getting any red lights, just the freeze. The console is not overheating as it was on my floor, open space, 68 degrees yesterday.

Should I just use it as target practice with my buddies M4?

is it still under the 3 year RRoD warranty? you can always attempt to force a RRoD

I think its an 07 model. If it does this again, im going to wrap it in a towel and play it til it melts.

You don't need to have a RRoD to replace the warranty how many times do I have to say it.

If it's under 3 years just call up XBox and ***** they will replace it.

I replaced my through best buy (twice now) the 2nd time, the onboard network card didn't work (I posted about this already) I called 1-800-4my-xbox and the technical representative was ready to replace the warranty just for that, it turned on and worked perfectly though so it proves you don't need to have RRoD...

Except for your warranty.

I don't know what you thin you did to "fix" whatever problem you were having, but I bet it voided your warranty.

The only way you could really void it is cracking the case off, besides the obvious, smashing it with a hammer or other destructive means.

I didn't take it apart, so no. Not voided.

Protip: You don't have to take things apart to void a warranty.
2009-04-09, 12:57 PM #11
with MS as long as that little sticker is intact they consider the warranty not voided and will repair it

Not if you melt the back of your xbox with an aftermarket cooler.

You can also melt lots of things inside trying the towel trick. I've known two people that got slammed for those respectively.

Aftermarket coolers are a scam. Besides, if you play long enough to need one, your console was bound to die anyway.

I have one that a friend gave me that was out of warranty apparently.. he had already opened it anyway thinking he could fix it. Anyway, it was doing the E74 error (one red light) so I took the heatsinks off, scraped off the old thermal paste and put on arctic silver. Also put those little washers in between the xclamps and the motherboard to make it a bit tighter.

So far it's been able to play GoW and Forza just fine, both games are known for getting the console pretty hot.

Decided to firmware mod the DVD drive since it's a second 360 anyway, so going to pick up some dual layer discs tomorrow to try it out :)

Arctic Silver is actually a rather poor compound to use. It provides superior performance but it degrades over time. I read an AMD whitepaper about it some time ago. They recommend various silicone dioxide/zinc oxide pastes (white goop) as well as some phase-changing materials (like the stuff that comes with the heatsinks).

I'm pretty sure Artic Silver was debunked massively herea while back.
