I'm having some very specific internet connectivity issues. These are my symptoms:

  • I can't get to Woot (www.woot.com) -- I get a "Connection Interrupted" / connection reset error in Firefox. Same deal in Opera/IE/etc.
  • I can load Shirt! Woot (shirt.woot.com) and Sellout Woot (sellout.woot.com) sort of okay -- it looks like the headers are loading and at least <title> and the first part of the <body> is loading, but none of the styles load and the rest of the page doesn't load (gets stuck on the spinning 'loading' status). Again, in Firefox; same in Opera/IE.
  • I can't connect to my workplace's Exchange Server (in Outlook). It just perpetually says "Trying to connect to Exchange Server" but never succeeds nor downloads new messages.
  • I can't connect to the Digsby server. When I start Digsby, it just perpetually shows "Connecting...". I just left it on for a long time and now it says "Authenticating..." but it won't get past that. The problem seems to be with reaching the Digsby server, and not specific IM services (AIM, etc) since Trillian works 100% fine.

I have no problem accessing the rest of the internet (all other sites, services, etc).

I thought at first that maybe it was a coincidence and it just happened to be that Woot, the Exchange Server, and Digsby were all down, but www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com says Woot is up, my coworkers have no problems getting their email, and my Digsby-using friends are all on Digsby happily with no problems.

So, what's up?

Misc info:
I'm on a home WiFi network with a Linksys router. All my other computers on this network experience the same problems, so it's not specific to this computer.

Thanks in advance!

I'm sure you have power cycled your network hardware?

Yes, that too.

Err okay well it randomly just fixed itself.

Does anyone have any ideas why this happened? I'm just curious now / in case it happens again.

Just a random connection problem, I get these sometimes to.
Nothing to see here, move along.

It sounds like it was a DNS problem where your computer was using the wrong IP for the woot.com (and probably the others) server, but it eventually expired from the cache and refreshed to a proper value.

From the fact it affects all computers means it would have occurred in a network router, I'm guessing you have one set up as the DNS server on your network and it's proxying and caching DNS requests (and "set up" can mean "it's the default setting").

If you have the problem again you can try explicitly using opendns servers or something to bypass the router's DNS caching entirely. Remember to flush your own local DNS cache using ipconfig /flushdns to force Windows to send fresh DNS queries to the new servers. Some apps will keep their own caches (Firefox does) so you might have to restart apps which still have problems (Firefox also has a cvar that controls its DNS cache timeout you can set).

Hrm, that's odd. I actually did run a ipconfig /flushdns as well as trying OpenDNS, but neither solved the issue  Oh well. Stupid computer.

Update: I can get to Woot through proxies. I'm guessing if I tried to access the other servers via proxy, it would work as well.

I suspect a DNS conflict. Try changing your router IP schema to something a little more obscure. Such as 192.168.122.1

I said you'd have to do both at once otherwise they won't work.

You've been BANNED from woot. :p
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
