There was another report I saw a week or two ago that said providers have the capability to dramatically increase bandwidth for almost nothing. The US continues to fall behind in access speed because these *******s keep trying to find ways to screw us.

If by "get the point" you mean putting it off to try again later once they've finalized their bandwidth viewing system for customers. (They released a statement saying just that, it was on Engadget)

As a few of you have helpfully pointed out in comments, Time Warner Cable has now put out a statement of its own that confirms in not-at-all Orwellian terms that it is shelving all of its consumption-based billing trials "while the customer education process continues." The company also says that it'll soon be making bandwidth measurement tools available to customers, which it hopes will "aid in the dialog going forward."

Basicially, we got owned but want to try to make people aware of their usage, because we're sore losers.

I think what they mean to do is prove that the tiered bandwith-based pricing system isn't so bad by "educating" consumers about how much they regularly use and saying "see, look, it won't really be different". And then push through the system.

In other words:
-Tried to implement new system
-Customers *****ed
-Will try to "educate" customers that they are wrong about it
-After consumer "gets it," implement new system anyway

What they'll probably try to do eventually is introduce the system so that the average use among users is priced lower than the current flat rate, so that they'll win over/confuse enough people to implement it without the same united front against them, then not adjust their prices as computer technologies increase in demand of bandwidth use, or something like it so that the tier-pricing would then be more than a flat rate would have for the average user.

Also there's no way they'll introduce this plan giving a lower average price. The goal here isn't to reduce network utilization, it's to profit. The overwhelming majority of people fall within the same minimal utilization - that's their baseline price. Everybody else will be overcharged to an absurd level.

People who actually use the service they pay for are the ones watching TV shows, movies and playing games on the internet instead of watching Time Warner Cable. They want to stop people from adopting new forms of media.

Get Fios. We've got a few years yet while Verizon still needs to convince people to switch before they'll start gouging.

Well, yeah. This is basically price discrimination (= getting rid of consumer surplus and turning it into revenue), which is a perfectly legitimate, economically-sensible and accepted business practice. It's just that this particular execution of it (using bandwith as a metric) is really retarded and unfair.

Not avaliable here. We're backwater. A phone company called Frontier is our domestic provider and they aren't running any kind of fiber service any time soon, although I wish they would. Trust me, if Fios was an option, I'd have had it months ago.

I don't think they're going to try anything more, one of the local politicians (Eric Massa) is in the process of passing a bill that will bar them from pulling this crap around here forever. Good thing too, pretty much everyone in upstate NY is limited to Time Warner Cable or Frontier. Its one or the other, unless your an idiot and get clearwire or some other ridiculously overpriced cell phone providers air card.

They accused Time Warner Cable of trying to reap profits at the expense of consumers who were accustomed to flat-rate/unlimited usage service.

while i do think the response to time warners attempt to do tiered pricing was the right way to go (b**** enough and they will eventually take note.) it always amazes me how people consider a business trying to make more money "criminal!" granted there have been some businesses who have indeed engaged in criminal activity to increase profits. however switching to tiered pricing is not in any way criminal.

but anyways, DO keep hassling time warner, cause soon as you stop they WILL switch to tiered pricing. or... you could always get a small business loan and start up your own isp.
