Can you save a notepad file as notepadfile.sql and have it work, or do you need to use something else to create the file, such as putty?

SQL is typically just written in text format, so saving it as any sort of text file will work fine.

Mk, the class is "Introduction to SQL and MySQL," so I just wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing.

And I asked because after I saved it in notepad, and uploaded it to my professor's site, it was supposed to give me an "auto-grade" thingy, and that didn't work. I assumed that the file was not the correct format or some such.

I sent my prof an e-mail a few hours ago, so hopefully I'll have the issue sorted soon.

[edit] notepad filez For LIFE!!! :P. I meant a file in notepad to save it by editing the tag to .sql. I was afraid that doing it this way would not ACTUALLY convert the file to an .sql format, it would just say .sql. Apparantly changing the file extension to .sql instead of .txt will work fine? Ok. Let me try to re-explain this.

Basically my professor wanted us to submit our "test" assignment via his online website, or alternatively through blackboard, to see the online grading system. Either way, it just wasn't working the way it was supposed to. For some reason, my file was not found in the database. I logged into putty just now, and manually submitted by typing the "submit file.sql" command, and then it worked properly.

My issue was understanding why my .sql file wasn't being submitted or recognized by his website. I'm still not sure why.

Seeing as how submit is not any sort of standard *nix command, nor has anything to do with SQL itself, I'm going to say your school sucks.

SQL queries are just text, there's nothing special about it.

I'm the one who doesn't know that, not my school!

I think my professor's webpage for submitting SQL files or copy/pasting SQL text into a window (2 different methods) is somehow not properly linked to my personal 'class' database. I decided to use putty to manually create the file, then use the "submit" command, and it works with the auto-grade and everything.
