it was a criminal trial about this construction contractor who wore hawaiian shirts and drove huge trucks and was kind of a douche and he was in trouble for putting the boot on his broad and he wouldn't have gotten away with it but the witnesses were dumbasses so he did

So how does that work?
So can any American, at anytime, be summoned to be on jury? Or do you sign up for it, or what?
Do they pay you or something?
2009-04-17, 11:39 PM #3
In Canada, it is one of the civic duties of a citizen. You only get paid after the 10th day.

I think I was summoned because I registered to vote. They pay you 15 bucks starting on the second day, plus 30 cents per mile from your address to the courthouse, one way only.

It's relatively easy to get thrown off the jury just by lying and being like "i hate ******s" but I was on spring break and wanted to see what it was like

I got jury duty once but I wasn't allowed to do it because I'd been arrested within whatever time period it was they specified on the form they sent to me.

So how does it work in the US? Here the court sends you a letter saying you've been selected, and they have you fill out an enclosed form to send back to them, but it basically says they use this to rate your eligibility and that you may not even be chosen to be on a jury if you're put on "the list." And after how ever many months of being on this list you are taken off and they wont use you again for how ever many years (I think it was five).

I've received summons numerous times, but I've never actually had to go in. Lucky me.

I've served on too many juries. Usually with complete morons. But sometimes not.

I was summoned once, but I never made it onto a jury. Basically they call a bunch of people together, then you sit there in the courtroom, while the prosecution and defense lawyers interview you as a group. Then they pick the people that are to stand for the trial. I was never selected.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Are you allowed to discuss cases on which you're the jury?

We've had Massassi flamed on some random forum, I totally want Massassi to be admitted as evidence in a case.

This post has now been subpoenaed.

My worst jury duty experience was a 2-week trial, where the State was suing a rest home. All the witnesses they called up were disgruntled former employees that worked there less than 2 days. It was so obviously a witch hunt. We (the jury) didn't deliberate very long on that one.

12 people ordering you to gag? Are you sure this was a jury? Sounds like fun times to me.

I once got summoned to jury.

I drove to the Santa Ana courthouse, 5-10 minutes late. I asked where this room # was. No one knew where it was. I walked throughout the hallways. Then I asked the police officer at the help desk and he said "wrong building." Turned out it was a building that was NOT 30 minutes from my house, a "satellite" location if you will, much closer to my home. So I drove there, arriving 1 hour late.

There are easily 100 people in the room. I sat down, noticed everyone had a jury badge, and asked a girl next to me where they got the badge. She said "go talk to the lady up front behind the window." I started getting up, then the lady said "EVERYONE BE SEATED. I'M GOING TO START CALLING OFF NAMES OF PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO TALK TO THE JUDGE." She called off 85% of the names. Those people left, and the room was very sparse.

I walked up and said "yeah...I kinda went to the wrong building, I went to the main courthouse in santa ana, I hope that's not too much of a problem being late." She gave me my badge, scanned my paper I got in the mail, and I sat down.

10 minutes later she called the names of the remaining 15-20 people, and said "We needed you guys as reserves for another case, but it turns out they don't need you. You're free to go."

JACKPOT!!!

That's pretty much what happened to me, except I got there like 1 minute late and I was like HOLY **** I HOPE I DONT GET IN TROUBLE and then she had us wait there for about 2 hours

What sort of trouble do you get into if you skip jury duty? Fines?

Possibly. Possibly jail time. There are probably varying laws from state to state I imagine.
