Star Wars: Warlords, or Why you should pick up Homeworld 2. RIGHT NOW.

I'm gonna keep this short so I can get to the pretty screenshots. Warlords is a Star Wars mod for Homeworld 2. It's awesome, and you need to go get it if you have Homeworld 2.

The website is located here: http://warlords.swrebellion.com/

Downloads:
http://www.swrebellion.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=6

You'll want teh Beta 0.30 TEST, and the music package for Star Wars music blaring while you make stuff go boom.

Ok, so why is the mod awesome? Well, for one, you get to control ISDs and SSDs and a whole crapload of other stuff and make them shoot at one another and go boom. If that's not enough, its also VERY PRETTY. Its a Homeworld 2 mod, after all.

Secondly, ITS AWESOME. Tactics like attacking an ISD from below and behind work, amongst other things. Hyperspace jumping is great. Generally its just a lot of fun.

Bad things: FRAMERATE KILLS. The weapons fire and other stuff will literally drop your framerate into the realm of non-existant. The balance is slightly eschewed towards large destroyer fleets and such, especially in a long game. Some models are not as accurate as they could be (ask Nob or Fox, doesn't bother me that much).

ITS AWESOME. GO GET.

Now, SCREENSHOTS.

An ISD I. Just to show the detail.

Yet another ISD on a pretty, pretty, Homeworld 2 map.

A Republic Destroyer. Its some EU ship. I don't follow the EU much, but I like the design.

An Allegiance Destroyer after some concentrated bombardment by Rebel destroyers, and insane amounts of attack runs by B-Wings. BATTLE DAMAGE IS COOL!

A Rebel Nebula Destroyer fighting off that same fleet we saw earlier. It died pretty.

An Executor-class SSD has some fun with 2 rebel destroyers in the background, while ISDs and a Titan in the middleground are chasing after something well below them.

Screenshot limit.

That same Executor SSD, with one of the ISDs, making **** go boom. Those explosions lasted about 2 minutes, non stop. There used to be a few dozen corvettes and frigates there. Also note the SSD is firing off a salvo of heavy rockets or torpedoes or something at its target.

A few seconds after the previous shot. Gives you an idea of what was blowing up.

A shot showing off my fleet as they finish off an enemy base. <3 ISDs.

Same fleet killing off the same base, but from a different angle. I like me the ISDs.

A Titan Cruiser and some of its buddies take out yet another Rebel base. Note the Victory Star Destroyers below it. They're like baby ISDs. <3 (Oh, there's also 3 variants of them, VSD Is, VSD IIs, and Harrow Destroyers. Yes, there's a lot of ships.)

And this is why you don't **** with the Empire unless you're some whiny farmboy from a backwater planet.

Yet another shot of a fleet blowing up a Rebel base.

Do the rebels have anything capable of taking out an SSD head-to-head? Or do they have to send out kamikazi A-wing pilots to do the job?

Not much can take out an SSD at this point, in my experience. Your best defense is an aggressive offense. It takes a CONSIDERABLE amount of time to tech up to an SSD, and the Executor takes something like 10-11mins. to build, so if you assume your enemy has one building, its best to try and knock out his Cruiser Shipyards (where its built) so you won't have to deal with it, at least not for a while. There ARE heavy cruisers like the Mon Remonda and the Mediator Battle Cruiser, but alone they're not much of a threat to an SSD. Not much is, at this point. There's still a lot of balance issues to work out.

Edit: I should probably note that there are 3 types of SSD in the game. Executor class, Sovereign Class, and Vengeance class (like Jerec's ship in JK). The cheapest is the Vengeance but its also the weakest. The Sovereign is slightly more expensive, but you have to tech quite a bit to get to it, and the Executor is prohibitively expensive, and again takes 10-11 minutes to build JUST BY ITSELF (not counting researching it), but it is the most durable and has the most firepower.

Why is the Executer in a higher class than a run-of-the-mill SSD? Have I been ignorant of the fact that the Executer was an uber-SSD?

Edit: Oh.

I'm to busy playing WoW to play this. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

But seriously, this should have come out for Homeworld, not Homeworld 2.

Well, its not THE Executor, per se (as in, the one that was in ESB/RotJ, and crashed into the DSII), but an Executor-CLASS SSD. They're the SSDs we all know and love from SW. The Vengeance-class and Sovereign-class are differnet super capital ships (but both classified as SSDs). The Sovereign technically has a mini-superlaser, but I don't think you can use it in the mod.

As for why is it more expensive.. well.. its a SSD. Its huge, its got an amazing amount of firepower (I've literally seen them take out a dozen or more destroyers without even flinching), and its damn near impossible to take out. The other two SSD class ships are less durable, and have less firepower, but are far cheaper to research and build than an Executor.

Edit: Tofu, I think there is a SW mod for Homeworld 1. Dunno where though.

Too bad I don't have HW2.. I would definitely give this a spin. So.. no Deathstar, though, right?

There USED to be a Death Star map, but all you could do, if you were playing as the Empire, is turn the thing. You couldn't fire the superlaser or anything like that.

I think HW2 is only like $20 now.

I highly recommend it either way as its an awesome game.

If you're playing the mod be prepared for INSANELY LOW FRAMERATES once the bigger ships start coming out. Its something to do with the weaponry, I'd imagine.

Just kidding. I know framerates will probably drop bad on my computer as my proc is crap.

I am downloading the mod now... I'll swing by EB tomorrow and pick up a copy [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

No no, trust me. Its definitely the mod. I can run stock Homeworld 2 at 1600x1200 w/ 4xAA and 6xAF without a sweat. But this mod will drop the framerate down to subterranean levels even at 640x480 for me (I've tried). I'm running a 9800 Pro, for reference.

i say the framerate drop could quite popssibly be tied to the 69878347623164957861238795612347895698724365789234569873465879234658792346598723465723465987234659872346598732465897643578262789346598273465 projectiles once you get a good number of well armed ships... i might consider HW2

So basically it's just a botched programming job.

Probably Jim, probably.

And yeah, I'd imagine its a programming issue. Universal performance loss across a wide range of systems, especially something this drastic, wreaks of CPU overhead, and thus programming. Might have something to do with the fact that these guys have, fairly accurately, I'm told, modeled and positioned gun positions on the ships. Considering the over-the-top nature of most Star Wars ships, it doesn't surprise me that there's a lot of overhead.
