Really good games AND useful software?
What a cool company.

Apparently StarDock couldn't figure out how to render the fences over an html desktop background. Their solution? Disable html desktop backgrounds, apparently by checking if there is one and turning it off every couple of seconds.

Net result : I can't use it with my animated flash desktops.

You'll be heartbroken if you ever bother to get off that age-old XP.

That said, Fences seems rather pointless.

I'd say the single most useful feature of it is that you can hide almost all your desktop icons with it via Quickhide so they (And their fences) only show up on a double click.

Instant uncluttered desktop.

I'll do that when I can buy a machine with windows7 already on it.

These sorts of things need to be all rolled together into one bundle. This and allSnap, and Stickies.

I misread this as Feces.

Looks fairly useful... but why would you need a flash desktop JM?

Because it's awesome?

By awesome you mean devouring CPU.

JM can be a prick but I'm sure he knows how to not eat up his own CPU, CM

Obviously not if he has a flash file playing on his desktop constantly. :suicide:

If it was a low framerate movie with simple animations that wasn't taking up a large part of the desktop and he has at least two cores, it could be acceptable.

If I keep Flash player open with a simple looping animation it uses about 0.8 cpu on average, I could live with that

Flash uses more CPU the larger resolution it's displaying. And we're talking about full-screen.

Multi-core would definitely help.

It doesn't have to be full screen, it can be a small movie within an HTML page.

Actually it doesn't run anything on the desktop when the desktop is obscured by a maximized window.

And Stardock had a program for that sort of thing on their website. It's like that, except free.

Also : If my CPU is sitting there doing nothing, wtf do I have it for?

jm is the sort of guy who goes through the drive-thru and idles in the parking lot while he eats

As long as we're talking about nifty free programs:

This guy has some interesting things though they're buggy. I didn't know he had a superbar replacement I guess I have something new to check out.

No I don't. I eat while driving to maximize efficiency.

Efficiency != an idle CPU. An idle CPU is inefficient. If I have the processing power, I might as well use it for something.

Yeah because a no-op uses so much power. :downs:

No, a CPU burning power rendering a flash-animated inefficient background is inefficient. You do know that CPUs use less power at idle (significantly less!) than at load, right? Most will even downclock themselves, reducing heat output as well.

unless jm's computer is ancient, but then he can just turn the crank slower

MUST MAXIMIZE CPU POTENTIAL

i <3 stardock. Object dock is the ****.

been using fences since it came out. i think its nice for desktop threads, just get rid of the icons, and voila! it doesnt like my vista desktop (on my laptop, hah). i can create fences, but cant see them. annoying. runs great in xp or 7 though.
