A New Hope

Empire Strikes Back

The Return of the Jedi

Edit: I strangely don't see the purported Hayden ghost in the Return of the Jedi changes, or the added Naboo celebration. So either those other site are wrong, or these sites are wrong.

I think the Naboo celebration and Hayden Christensen are confirmed, as are others that I don't remember now. I wouldn't be surprised if those were all authentic.

There was already a thread about this a couple weeks ago where the changes were torn apart as is the usual with anything star wars around here.

The Hayden and Naboo in RotJ has been confirmed. There was a leak in the audio commentary for the film where Lucas and Ben Burt are talking about the reason for the addition. They said your spirit becomes one with the force when you die, as was the case with Obi-wan and Yoda. Anakin dies at the end of Episode III when Darth Vader is born, but his soul is trapped until Vader is destroyed.

WHY?

Lightsabers are the best thing about star wars.. and now they're making them all look like a newbie's 2-minute photoshop job!

Ugh.

So, why didn't Qui-Gon or all the Jedi in Ep II become one with the force when they died? They still haven't explained that.

I could tell you if you wanted me to spoil Episode III for you.

And all those are still frames, you won't notice much of a difference other than the fact that they look a little bit more crisp, like the lightsabers of Episodes I and II.

Those lightsabers do look awful... they look a lot better with the white cores and the colored fringes. I can only hope that those images are fakes.

There's a BIG difference between the Episode I and Episode II sabers. Episode I's sabers were smoother, the glow faded out. Episode II's sabers were almost solid color and very sharp. These sabers look closer to Episode II's, unfortunately.

Also, for some of the sabers, I don't believe that they are on the fault of Lucasfilm. I think they are only a mere matter of the person who took the screencap's video settings.

If you take the picture and put it into photoshop, open up the levels and set the color in the core as the "white" in the picture it looks fine.

That's ricockulous. Essentially, it means that Luke's redemption of his father was meaningless.

Yeah, but it makes for a better story, in my opinion, that Anakin had buried away the good in him, and that only his love for his son in the face of certain death could bring that back to surface.

It's still the same idea. Anakin's dark side trapped his light side, and only in the face of his son's death could the good anakin overcome the evil.

That **IS** bad. I did some lightsaber rotoscoping of my own in photoshop once and I did a better job than that my first time.

The new sabers look awful-- it looks like the contrast has simply been cut by 50%.

and what the the hell is that blue-white smudged thing on the wall light behind obi-wan-- it looks like there was some saber glow there that they didn't remove.

It'd be funny if this whole thing was a hoax made in photoshop.
2004-08-21, 1:40 PM #24
Some of them can be explained as hoaxes, but some cannot (ie. Hayden in RotJ, the Emperor change in ESB, Boba Fett's voice change in ESB). I suppose the Jabba one could be faked, but it'd take a LOT of time.

Dammit, don't you guys read? the crappy sabers are due to bad brightness/contrast in the source video of the 2004 edition. hence why he edits the image afterwards.

Personally, assuming it is all true, I like the new changes. Sure, some of the saber glows are off a bit but I'm sure it'll look better when in motion than as still shots. The new Jabba looks a little better than the old one because it looks a tad closer to the RotJ one except the eye color is off and he has a little too many dark spots. Other than that, it's looking much better than the SE version.
