My video card just crapped out. Here's hoping Visiontek is easy to RMA stuff with.

I wasn't even gaming...Firefox killed it. .(

And on top of that, I just had to clean a glob of grease/dirt/road grime out of my eye. That'll teach me not to wear safety glasses when I'm under my car. .(

dood it was an HD4870...it should be able to handle two at once!

It's working now, oddly enough. It was almost 90 today, my room is on the 3rd floor and I don't have AC...so I'm guessing it may have overheated.

Are you overclocking it? That could be the problem if it doesn't have enough cooling.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Blah it did it again and it is not too warm in here anymore. I hope Visiontek's RMA service is decent.

2009-04-28, 7:07 PM #11
What is it doing?

Although Visiontek has an unproven track record for RMAs, there are a few people who reported to have a turn around time of about 7 days. So I think you should be fine if you live in the states.

I had that happen to me, but it was with a refurbed video card and mobo. I ended up RMA-ing them both to Newegg,w here I got them. Sounds like your video card is shot, which I think was what was going on with mine. That or something was f-ed up with that PCI-E slot, but I didn't have another video card to test it.
I had a blog. It sucked.

I actually get something similar to that occasionally when I switch clock speeds (whether up or down).

I get a black screen when I try to boot. I'm going to try safe mode, if I can even get that far...new drivers...maybe I'll get lucky. For now, back to schoolwork. Argh.

Is the fan on the GPU working? How about all the other case fans? Heatsink properly attached? Heatsink fan working?

Try booting into the BIOS config screen. Find a screen with temp indicators on it if there is one. See if it does the same thing without Windows to help it along (:v:) and if possible check the temp to see if it overheats.

2009-04-28, 9:09 PM #20
It won't even boot into Windows now...it'll POST, sometimes. When it worked earlier, GPU temp was 47c and the fan was operational. This thing has a wicked fan on it (Newegg link to card).

Everything appears to be working properly... .(

I wonder if I should just buy this for $90 and see if it fixes the problem - if not, I can toss it in my other system...but the PS won't handle it, so I'd have to upgrade that too..

$89.99 shipped for a 4850!

What speed are you running the fan at? Running CCC?

CCC default- auto adjusted...it worked great - whenever I was gaming (not at all recently, though), it would ramp up...never had any visual artifacts- this was an awesome card.

I can get a 4650 for ~$45 AR on the egg - I might get that to hold me over until I get this RMA'd, then I can stuff it into my mATX system (low power)..

You should confirm that its your video card first. A weakening power supply can also bring artifacts to the screen when the video card is not getting enough juice. You should swap the 4870 out and put in another card, and put the 4870 in another system. Changing power supplies won't hurt either, but putting your 4870 in another system will get around the power issue if that is the case.

I don't think the video card pulls that much juice on bootup...unless my power supply is completely toasted.

My other system has a meager power supply, and the 4870 won't fit in the case, either. I want a 4650 for my extra system anyway- I just bought one from Newegg for $42.xx...if that doesn't solve my problem, it'll go in my spare box and I'll get a new power supply.

Sorry if it's been stated but I've been up late can't read it all right now.

My 4870 started severly overheating after a few months because dust became so caked in it that even with 100% fan speed it still got to 95c+. Try taking off the heatsink and cleaning it thoroughly? If not give it a shot and even put some new thermal paste on there if ya got any.

Temp said 47c a few minutes before it crashed - the fan was running well under 50%. .(

***. Power Supplies oft go unblamed for hardware problems. In my experience, I've had many more power supplies fail than other parts in my computer (good brands of PSU's as well, Antec, FSP, etc)

I've gone through 2 Antecs and a Thermaltake PSU and two of those went into the same machine. If you want to check 100% for the video card, just open your case up, and put a fan next to it (like a box fan) on high. If all the card's fans are working, this should keep it from overheating under normal browsing load. If it still does it then its probably the PSU.

Agreed.

Check your PSU.

A temp of 49c is hardly anything to worry about.
2009-04-29, 12:54 PM #31
I'm pretty sure the card wasn't overheating- like I said, the fan wasn't even working hard.

I don't have a spare power supply..argh.

What size do you need? I have a spare laying around I might sell you cheap. I think it's a Thermaltake.

I have an E5200 @ 3Ghz (stock voltage), 4Gb, two 7200rpm HDs, two optical drives, sound card/etc and an HD4870. 500w or larger, probably?

Eh, I don't think the spare I have is up to that. Sorry. It's a 430W tops. Ran it on my old Barton 2500+ machine with a 9800 Pro.

Thx anyway! It would probably work, but if the new card doesn't solve the problem I'll buy another power supply..I have a use for the extra card anyway.
