Looking to cut down the size of an MP3 to use on our website...

Okay, before you all go 'OMG MP3S! ILLEGAL!' we're looking to embed the MP3 into our site so nobody can download them. Second, the MP3 is of the Russian National Anthem, which is freely available online anyway, so I don't see any problem.

Right now it's 3.37Mb and I'd like to compress it to a size that's preferably non-broadband (i.e. 56k) friendly without a massive quality loss. Possible? Get back to me if you can and that'd be lovely! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

96kbps. Below that it sounds horrid.

btw, I don't think its possible to actually embed a mp3 into the site, b/c HTML doesn't allow it.

All someone would have to do is look at your source, see the mp3 file referenced in your code, and then cut/paste the file path into the browser to download it.

Most of our readers aren't that clever.

Hmm I can't get it below 2.5 MB - best think of something else to put up then.

2.5 MB on 56k doesn't take that long.

If its freely available online then why would your viewers want to download it? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif]

Also you could maybe just shorten it a bit.

It is not nice to force the visitors to download it, though

What Molgrew said - on my blog originally I had a Muse song embedded and it really wound the dial-uppers.. up... because it would download in bits and keep replaying itself, and it would slow their connections down no end. Maybe we need some sort of music toggle switch... maybe my mate can code that, I'll ask him... that way the broadbanders can hear the music in its full length and quality.

can you find a good midi of it?

and midi does not suck it's your computer's hardware/software

on the right computers midi can sound quite good provided you aren't trying to do guitar with it

or you could try 64kbps which is a big quality cut but it really depends on the song

remember the doom3 theme is a 32kbps ogg so some people will go with unnessecarily low bitrate files sometimes

As terrible as it is to stream music, try using Flash.

Well, I hate flash too, but I can't think of a better way to do it short of MIDI.
