http://www.wired.com/autopia/2008/11/the-40-mpg-450/

I thought electrolysis has been proven to be inefficient in that it takes about the same amount of energy to seperate hydrogen from water as the hydrogen creates in combustion. So how is it working here?

It's working here because Wired doesn't know anything about science.

I spy a gasoline engine, so I'm going to go with that.

What's funny is, a properly tuned and boosted K20A2 can push more than 400hp. I don't see how a twin-turbo(added) V6 from honda can only do 450. I guess it's a mild boost, since they make another $100,000 from turning it up a bit and probably sleeving the motor.

maybe working because the engine is not a purely hydrogen engine, just uses it as a boost and to improve fuel economy?

It does that, but it still has to use extra battery power to create the electrolysis process, which in turn causes more work for the alternator, which in turn wastes more gas. That's why it has been considered inefficient IIRC.

"the Scorpion uses electrolysis to convert water into gaseous hydrogen. The hydrogen is mixed with 91-octane gasoline to improve the fuel economy and reduce the emissions of the car’s 3.5-liter internal combustion engine."

So they are just mixing gas with the hydrogen. Not a bad idea.

I'm sure a big part of the reason they are "only" making 450 hp is the fact that it takes more gas to make more power, even with the hydrogen system. So while they COULD make more power, it would lower the mpg which is just as important in this car since it's a selling point. What other 450hp car gets 40mpg? None that I've ever seen.

Pfft, I was more impressed with that fully road-legal solar powered car that they've driven the length of Britain that was on the gadget show the other night.
nope.
