What the **** is Vista doing and how can I stop it?
2009-05-10, 8:20 PM #1
Okay, I have a (probably) simple problem but I can't work out how to fix it. Google isn't much use to me as I'm not entirely sure what Vista is doing, so I'm not entirely sure what to Google.

Occassionally, when I open a folder a bar at the top starts 'loading' and takes ****ing ages to complete and slows explorer down to the speed of a particularly viscous treacle.
Click to embiggify.

It's certainly not 'loading' my files, everything appears instantly, but it's doing something and it takes a ****ing long time. Is it indexing locations or some ****? I can click on the X to make it stop, and it all speeds right up again and everything is good, but it pisses me off every time.

It's reading metadata from the files and maybe even thumbnailing. There might be a way to turn it off but it's never bothered me enough to care.

Did you seriously compress you entire hard drive, all of it's files? That's a big hit on performance...
2009-05-10, 9:16 PM #3
It's searching through the files and listing them, with all of their data.

This is where the search indexing comes in.

Relapse leaked and it's actually pretty awesome and not the Encore 2 most people were fearing it'd be. One of the best songs is "Insane," which is about gay stepfather incest rape.

Not to make this an Eminem thread, but I thought Relapse was pretty terrible :/

Oh good, more Eminem songs about gays.

The most annoying thing I found about it was his new flow / weird accent, but I got used to it after a while. The second most annoying thing was the lack of diversity in subject matter (9/10ths of the album is (appropriately?) about drugs). But other than that, I enjoyed it because for the most part the songs were real Slim Shady songs that had some pretty good rhyming and lyricism. Relapse 2 is supposed to be more Marshall Mathers/Eminem stuff, so I'm definitely looking forward to more.

Underground, Insane, and Beautiful I really liked. The rest of the album was pretty solid imo. The only songs that sucked were the singles (minus Beautiful which is coming out in a couple days).

Edit: Vin, I dunno why but he goes pretty heavily back into his anti-gay (mainly anti-lesbian) stuff in this album =/ Probably because he hasn't pissed people off for a while and feels like he needs to do it again.

If you have a lot of files in a folder it's going to take some time for it to read metadata as CM said.

But that has nothing to do with search indexing, that happens in the background in a separate process. Xzero doesn't know what he's talking about, I hereby demote him to Xnegativeone.

Kieth Chegwin for a day, Kieth Chegwin for a day, I wanna be wanna be wanna be Cheggers for a day!

With regards to Eminem, I think he's a ****ing genius. He's linguistically fascinating to listen to, he's an incredibly clever wordsmith. What puts him way above most other rappers is his ability to completely switch rhythm and rhyme scheme mid-sentence and keep flow, like in Lose Yourself. And the interplay between Eminem as himself Marshall Mathers and Emimen as the fictional alter-ego character 'Slim Shady' allows him to do a lot of very clever and funny stuff. Very similar to Hannah Montana, actually, which I think he mentions in Relapse. I've not listened to the whole album yet, but I've not heard any particularly outstanding tracks. So far it's fairly bland. The Eminem Show is still my favourite album.
And yeah I too get a little annoyed when he puts on the high whiny voice when as Slim Shady, he doesn't always do it and it's totally not necessary.

Anyway, back to the point... What the **** is Vista doing and how can I stop it?

Haha, there's actually a fairly good skit at the very end of the album, he parodies some of his own songs.

Did you not like Crack a Bottle? It was more of an old-school hip-hop track, with Em rapping over a pretty slow beat, but it was a great contrast of three legends.

I think I am actually responsible for Mort-Hog getting into Eminem. It's because I sent him Tori Amos' cover of his "97 Bonnie and Clyde".

Tori's version was better!

Wow, that is actually true, I'm amazed you remembered that! I listened to that Tori Amos song again a few days ago and I thought of Flirbnic. I bought the rest of that Tori Amos album too, where she does covers of songs with male narrators, and it's all very good indeed.

Also, you'll be pleased to know that I'm growing my hair again. I won't cut it until I've completed my PhD.

I could name about 10 hip hop artists who blow him away. Instead I'll name one white rapper who blows him away, AND doesn't think hes black and sound like a pissed off ghetto wannabe while doing it. Aesop Rock.

Show me anything eminem has rapped about his white trash life that comes close to that and maybe I'll reconsider.

You're a fool. I don't like Eminem but I have to give him credit where it is due. He is, currently, the best lyricist on the market. There is nobody out there that can touch the way he is able to put together words with a flow and like someone said, change it up the instant later and have it still flow just as nicely. Eminem GREW UP as a street rapper, a freestyler, a battle rapper. If you gave ANY rapper out there a mic, and told them to go into a freestyle battle with Eminem, he would tear them apart. Same with Biggie, he grew up on the streets freestyling. He was the only person that could touch Eminem in a freestyle battle, he'll just tear you apart and talk about some ****ed up **** while doing it.

In regards to his new album, it's not terrible. There are a couple songs on it that are bad, like the singles, and I agree I hate when he does that stupid voice. He has a huge ego problem, but you'd find it hard to find a rapper that really doesn't (mainstream). I agree that I can't really stand the guy that much but come on, you have to give credit where it's due. The guy is the best lyricist known currently, hands down. White or not. If you are going to talk about a rapper that is terrible with lyrics, flow, and actually shouldn't even be selling records, let's change the discussion to 50 Cent. That's one person I wish the shooter didn't miss (miss with a mortal wound that is).

That video you posted is god awful. I don't know how that showcases the guys flow but I could tell you just by listening to the first 24 seconds of the song and how slow the guy raps, Eminem would already have 5 or 6 verses spit out about him ****ing his mom or something before he even finished his first verse. Hey let me rap slow because its easier to rhyme that way! The lyrics are pretty bad too.

Regarding the thread, I hate when Vista does that too. But it doesn't hinder my performance so I don't know why it would be doing it for you. Also, if you are looking for some kind of porn folder, I think I would like to see what's in that "Gang Garrison" one. Sounds kinky.
2009-05-13, 8:41 AM #35
Yeah, that slow rap is pretty damn 80s, even Falco can rap better than that. Though Aesop has pretty cool surrealist twinge.

You must be deaf. There is so much content and triple play in those verses you'd be a moron not to hear it in ANY of his songs.

As far as idolizing eminems "lyrical talent", Pharoah Monche, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Black Thought, Nas, just to name a few can completely slaughter your beloved ghetto wannabe superstar.

Sure he can rap disses and say stupid things people find funny, but when it comes to substance, he lacks greatly, unless hes rapping about his seemingly white trash lifestyle which people eat up for some unknown reason.

Granted, he is better then almost all the garbage aired on the radio today, I will give you that much.

I think you just think because he's got the spotlight over other much more talented underground rappers, that automaticially makes him some kind of god, to which you would be wrong.

As far as speed, who gives a damn? Its not like hes freestyling, nor is eminem in his fast songs, so reading off a piece of paper faster or not has NOTHING to do with lyrical talent. Period.

Well, the first thing I mentioned in my post was that I did not like Eminem. I don't like him, I don't like what he stands for for rap, and I don't like what he raps about.

I listen to underground rap, so it's not as if I have no knowledge of the artists that are out there, and in a freestyle battle none of them could hold a candle to Eminem. I've always said to my friends that are hardcore Eminem fans, if you give Eminem a piece of paper and give the next to Nas, or a lot of other artists, they would destroy Eminem. But, give them just a mic, and Eminem would have the upper hand. It's just their backgrounds and the styles they grew up with. Eminem is a battle rapper, which is why his lyrics are the same old ****, just about killing and raping, etc. He is always attacking someone in 98% of his songs, and the other few he dedicates to his little girl.

Him having the spotlight has nothing to do with his flow being crazy. And I know what you are saying about how fast he rhymes having nothing to do with it, but it's more about the style. He can switch from super fast, to super slow, mix it up in between and not change a thing in the beat and it all matches up still. Very few artists, even if they have the talent, try that in their songs.
