My computer just broke
2009-05-16, 4:54 PM #1
So yeah I spent like 2k putting this computer together and I have had it less than a year

I was in Photoshop and it just turned off

I tried turning it on again and it turned off again

So I waited a little while and tried again, this time it made a clicking buzzing noise and got as far as the windows splash screen, whereupon it froze and shut off again

I ****ing hate computers

Does anyone know what happen

Powersupply?

I would guess it's hard drive related, but I would pull the cover off and power it up to see exactly where the ticking/buzzing noise is coming from.

If any of the CPU/GPU/PowerSupply fans are not spinning, it could be overheating after a few seconds.

Sounds like overheating to me too.

If it just turns off it's VERY likely it's overheating. Check the CPU fan and heatsink to see if it's spinning and not clogged with dust.

Oh yeah? Well my $1400 gaming computer was stolen before I had it a year. So. I win.

Or lose. :(

But yeah, overheating or power supply. I bet.

You might have cable stuck in your CPU fan.

As has already been said. Overheating is my guess, but it could also be the power supply.

Check your fans next time you boot it up and make sure they are all spinning normally.

We turned it on with the panel off and made a video. All the fans seemed to be functioning normally though, until it turned itself off that is. Video will be up soon hopefully.

You should take this opportunity to stop wasting time on videogames and focus on your rap career.

Put a fan blowing into the open case, if it doesnt help at least some, then its probably not overheating unless you have the thing overclocked way high. Change the PSU, if that doesnt work, could be the RAM. I had a ram issue in one of my boxes once and it would just turn completely off for no reason at any given time. Took me forever to figure it out.

Just go into BIOS when it turns on and look at the temperatures. If they don't steadily rise until it shuts off, then it's not overheating.

From the video I am far more willing to believe it's the PSU.

I agree. I would also try resetting your BIOS, if you havent already.

That's happened to me a few years ago, and in my case it was the power supply failing. I highly advise against continually turning it on and off, because it eventually fried other parts of my computer when it died out. (This was about 6 years ago. Is it safer now? Your guess is as good as mine.)

sounds alot like mine did, i had a faulty psu. tried EVERYTHING, not thinking it was the psu cause it was fairly new (less than a year old)...anyway, that's what it was.

Either overheating or powersupply. Had this same thing happen to me recently though and it was my PSU.
