Has FireFox turned into a POS, or is it just my PC ready for a reformat?

It seemed like FireFox was the hot ticket in web browsing, at one point. Now it seems like I get crashes more frequently, along with bugs such as it not responding to clicks of certain buttons. Is it going south? Is the world ready for a replacement? Or is it just me?

Chrome.

FF is still rock solid for me.

fine here, format time

i haven't had the 'not responding to button clicks' problem since i think about when it changed from firebird to the first version of firefox, on win2000

Chrome.

No issues with FF here.

No problems with firefox myself, but chrome is faster and cleaner, so.... chrome

Yea I can't live without adblock and noscript and little tweaks like Grab n' Drag for tablets and stuff >_<

Another reason I was sorta put off by Chrome was the fact that your history/oft-visted sites isn't/aren't stored locally. Granted that's probably just me being paranoid but I don't even keep a history in Firefox and I run NoScript and CS Lite on whitelist. So yeah. <_<

I can count on one hand the number of times Firefox 3 has crashed.

I can count on one hand the number of times Chrome has crashed in a day.

Chrome's no more stable, in fact, less stable when working with plugins. I especially hate when the whole browser crashes despite their whole separate processes system.
2009-05-17, 8:04 AM #11
recently Chrome just doesn't load any pages. Not even the neat 'most visited sites' page.

Firefox just can't handle the amount of tabs I have open, it regularly consumes 1.8gb of RAM

IE8
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I really do like Chrome for browsing at work.

I'd say you have a runaway extension. I've had 20+ tabs open before, no issues. I have 8 open right now and it's only using ~230MB, and that's including YouTube.
2009-05-17, 10:26 AM #17
WTF with all the open tabs.
I usually have 4, max.

And I like FF as a browser better, but Chrome is just so much faster on my computer.
2009-05-17, 11:06 AM #18
I've been having loads of crashes in FF. At least one/day if not more frequent.

I regularly have 50+ tabs open and I get under a gig of ram usage.

50+ tabs?

Pages load just as fast as it take you to click the tab. And in most cases, by the time you've decided to go from 1 of your 50 tabs to another, it's been updated. I always just close pages when I'm done with them. I use chrome, so I type a few letters and hit enter and I'm at my new page in about a second.

Don't knock it until you try it.

I don't keep tabs open because they're terribly slow to load (although some are, even on Chrome), I keep them open so I don't forget what I'm doing. Multitasking. I'll have the PHP site open on a documentation page I'm reading, I'll have the Massassi forums open, I'll have some funny YouTube video open ready to watch when I have the time, etc.

FF 3.5b4 seems a bit faster than the earlier betas.

However until they have tab processes in 4.0 there is going to be sluggishness that is unforgivable in the era of GOOGLE CHROME.

2009-05-17, 12:22 PM #23
The only time Chrome has crashed for me was when Flash killed it.

What are you using to view RAM usage? Task Manager's figures include memory that has been paged to disk.

Dash, are you using a beta of Firefox? I get occasional crashes with Firefox 3.5 betas, and it's gotten better for each new version.

I'm using 3.0.10 according to Help -> About.

Try turning off all of your extensions and see if the problem goes away. Then, reenable them one by one until the problem comes back. You may try deleting your user profile (be sure to back it up!) and seeing if that fixes it.

Firstly, it's not uncommmon for me to have over 100 tabs open.
Secondly, I'm on OSX which shows you both physical and virtual memory usage. If I were to include virtual memory usage we're talking about peaks of about 5 gig, but that's not really an issue since OSX is very generous with virtual memory allowance (tweetie uses 3.5 gig but that's apparently because it's a 64bit app)

Okay 100 is sort of ridiculous. How in the world do you even find the tab you're looking for? Half your window must be tab rows, or if you scroll, you must have to scroll for ages to find the one you want!
2009-05-17, 2:24 PM #30
you can have multiple tab rows?

I scroll, I use the scrollwheel so I can get across the complete list in a couple of seconds. You tend to open tabs in clusters anyway, so related tabs are usually close to each other.

With Tab Mix Plus you can, you can set it so it has x number of rows, and beyond that it scrolls.

I never had problems with fire fox, save this last reformat when it crashed when I tried to download or save a file. Then that dissapeared after an update and I don't have that problem or any other anymore.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Becareful with what plugin you have for Firefox. Some of them can make it more prone to crashing like that paypal plugin.
2009-05-17, 6:00 PM #34
I have some add-ons because they used to be (at least I thought they were) stock functions within Firefox way back in early 2.0 and now they are not, and I can't seem to live without the features.

Adblock Plus 1.0.2

Basics 3.0.1 - add a "new tab" button on the left of the tab bar. I use this ALOT. This was one of those things I mentioned above.

ColorfulTabs 3.9.1

IE Tab 1.5.20090207

New Tab Homepage 0.4 - when I open a new tab, it automatically pulls up the homepage (google.com). This was the other thing I was referring to.

[Edit: I forgot the Noia 2.0 theme]

You can add a "new tab" button if you open the customize menu on the nav bar. As for the homepage tabs, there are other extensions that give you that feature and more. I'm using something called Tab Mix Plus

Also, it must just be me but Opera crashes a lot.

Thanks for the tip. Tab Mix Plus reminds me a lot of the old Tabbrowser Preferences, which I loved. TMP has the new tab button on the left also.

Very nice - me likey.

Now I'm running:
Adblock Plus
ColorfulTabs
IE Tab
IE View
and Tab Mix Plus.

I'll keep an eye out for crashes. I was having a lot of crashes at work too, and I am running the same extensions there, so that has to be the source of the instability. Sounds good, anyway.
