I mentioned Ultima Online a while ago, free to play, although you need a cd from somewhere

http://www.gamesites200.com/ultimaonline/

most shards run these days are either ultra carebear RP shards, or ultra griefing PK shards though I have to warn you

I think Lineage is emulated now, not sure if there are any servers around or what

Guild Wars (eventually for Windows and Linux), and Planeshift (wait for the new version, as mentioned above...oh, and it's for Windows and Linux).

But yeah, thanks for the Ideas. The only one that wont work on my computer is that Planetside one, the MMORPG - FPS one...

You do know that it's legally questionable to play on a non-OSI shard, right?

Guild Wars... its not out yet, but I am pretty sure its free. I think you need to pay for it once, but there is no monthly fee after that.

Yes, Guild Wars costs money for the game itself, but to play online is completely free.

Guild Wars isn't an MMORPG but it's close enough, and it's damn fun too.

I'll be getting guild wars, than. I'd love to get into the MMO scene, but monthly fees, I refuse.

Nice try kindergarten cop, but there's no legality question about it, free shards have been around for over 6 six years. If a free shard tried to charge money, it would be a bit more in the grey area, but none do.

IPY was at one stage more popular than most if not all OSI shards, did they have any legal problems? No, in fact OSI asked the guys running it if they wanted to help set up a pre-UO:R OSI shard(which they turned down incidentally).

Legally, if there's any sort of encryption in the network transfer between the UO shard and your computer, and they had to break that encryption in order to emulate a server, then they've broken the law, whether they profit from it or now. It's the same law that makes modding your xbox illegal.

In the USA, anyway..

I downloaded Planeshift... and it took some doing to actually connect to their server (damn router). That game LAGS good. I couldnt figure out if it was graphical or my internet connection. I think it was graphical, yet it looks just ok, and I am on a 9800... *shrugs*

And SAJN, did you get into a beta for guild wars or something?

I don't know about that, the encryption for UO packets has been cracked over 35 times with no bad consequences so far.

www.projectro.com Great free private RO server. People are nice, everything's just perfect. It's even legal, at least as far as I know. I've talked to the guy who owns it a couple times and he says he's rented a license.

And people jay-walk all the time without getting arrested. Doesn't mean it's not illegal; just means most companies look the other way. If you want an example of where someone didn't look the other way, I suggest you google Kevin Mitnik and see what happened to him when he decided to crack some cell phone encryption schemes.

Show me hard proof of that matty, and I'll agree with you. So far I've never been led to believe that the one I play on is illegal.

A. Nowhere on his site does it say he has a license.

B. Licenses for that game are helluva expensive, in upwards of $100,000.

C. It doesn't run on the Aegis server, which means it is running on illegal server software, regardless of license or not. (This is easily noted because Aegis servers are very, very slow, requiring in upwards of 10 servers to host only a thousand people effectively.) The aegis software was once found on an FTP account, and via a bit of reverse engineering, new software was created. Obviously this reverse engineering is illegal, and Gravity has shut down many of the server program sites already.

C. All legal RO servers are listed on www.ragnarokonline.com. Oddly, I don't see it on there.

D. It's been taken down before. Originally the site was a page full of other free servers. Then he started his own. Then it was shut down, but brought back up later. Since then, he has had lots of server trouble, most of which I attribute to the fact that no hosting service will host him when they find out what he is doing.

The only valid point there is the fourth, which I may admit is a bit...offputting. But still, it's just not enough to convince me. How do you know it isn't really slow? The server's never really gone over 1000, 700 much less, and it got extremely laggy even then, on 2 server machines! So you just don't know.

And the rest are just educated guesses.

For slowness:

Sakray has approx 1200 users on it at night. It has 10 game servers. Count em, 10! And even then it sometimes becomes laggy. And if you would mind looking at any of the private server forums, you would find that it is WELL KNOWN that Aegis runs much slower than any other server software.

For everything else:

I gave you some valid points, so show me proof that this private server is any different than the others.
