So recommend me one.
I would prefer wireless, but I don't really need it. Something that's rock hard and will last a while is a must. I don't want any crappy useless extra buttons or sliders, just a nice feeling reliable desktop mouse.
I refuse to pay more then 40$, 50 if I REALLY must.

My Logitech MX518 has served me flawlessly, and it's quite inexpensive now. It's a fairly old model by now though if you care about that.

Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

What Krok said. My MX510 is still going strong after 5 or so years. Basically anything by Logitech in your price range should work fine.

I recommend Microsoft's Optical Blue Mouse, for no reason other than the fact that mine projects an image of Jesus Christ.

I have a Logitech LX710 wireless keyboard/mouse combo, which is pretty nice, but a little annoying sometimes because there is a small amount of input lag that makes playing games sorta mreh

The mouse is really nice though. Only complaint is that the scroll wheel click is sort of soft/muted.

I got one of these on woot for $25. Great mouse, very comfortable use, and an interesting texture, almost like it sticks to your skin but not sticky. Good software comes with it as well.

I'd say MX510, if you can still find one on the cheap. The G series is the successor to this mouse, and those can be found on sale for ~30 bucks every once in a while. An MX510 shouldn't run you more than 20 bucks but it may be hard to find.

I've had mine for years, but always had issues with connectivity. The latest update from Logitech helped a lot, but it never felt responsive enough to play FPS with.

My dad has a wireless mouse. It sucks. Wired FTW.

Get a five button mouse, they're good for games. A second wheel wouldn't hurt either for gaming (or a horizontal scroll axis). But I have a 3-axis model myself.

And don't go with a ball mouse (if they even make them anymore). Red lights ftw.

Adjust the feedback in setpoint.

Mine has performed flawlessly. I use it in a PS/2 port though rather then USB because I find on my machine, when running USB the mouse tends to skip across the screen now and then. You could try that too, just use the green adaptor that came with it.

Also I play the UT series religiously and have had no problems with the mouse, I feel its a major advantage.

I like Razer mice. Good, reliable, and hardy mice that last a long time.

BUT, since you said you won't spend over $40. I'd go with the mx518. Its been a good mouse that is STILL running strong after, what? 5 years? Of course its no longer the best you can get, but still a pretty darn good mouse considering.

That'd be my choice if I were looking for a cheap-ish mouse.

I found the MX1000 fantastic for gaming. Unfortunately it drowned when I spilt tea all over it.

I now have a MX Revolution which is comparable. I don't like the scroll wheels on it much and really miss the rocker switch for scrolling. I wanted another MX1000 but everywhere was either out of stock or ridiculously expensive when I needed my new mouse
